Here be a Northern Soul styled split single for an otherwise uneventful Thursday morning.
The A-side is a collaboration between some guy named The Hawk (nice) and The Heavy vocalist Little Hannah Collins. It’s a slick polished girl pop number, inspired maybe by the glory days of Motown and/or Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound (and Pussy). Allegedly the duo has a full album of this kind of stuff in the works, which seems like a promising idea.
The B-side offers a rougher, slightly more unhinged take on a similar style. It’s still in somewhat the vein of late 60s girl fronted soul/pop, but some sleazy Hammond affectations and a bit of wah-wah guitar also take it a few steps into blaxploitation soundtrack territory. Gizelle Smith ably handles the vocal duties, fans of Sharon Jones need to pay attention to her work.
