The 2009 Register Vol. 9: Selfsays

Before, I start I would like to say that I am very flattered to be asked to be a part of the 2009 register and share my views on the year that was. Alright here we go then…2009 was a year that brought such curve balls as celebrity death, Balloon Boy, and the rise of Twitter. Twitter has probably always been on the rise but I wasn’t aware of it, then later became addicted to it this year. Truth be told, I found out about Balloon Boy among other news this year through Twitter. Is that shameful I got a lot of news this year through Twitter? My mom would probably say so. Me, I don’t know how to quite answer that. Maybe, I will have a better answer for you during The 2010 Register. On a side note, the day I recorded my vocals for my song that appears on the PhilaFlava Project, was the same that day Michael Jackson passed.

A pretty big highlight for me this year was the release of my EP Something out Of Nothing. A collection of songs I was sitting on for while. They were originally intended for 12 inches with labels that in the end passed on them. I figured well I have enough songs and they work well together let’s try get something out there. I hit up, my buddy. Jon at tRUE Radio, he was down to help me out and in February of this year I put out the project in conjunction with tRUE Radio. It received a lot of nice placements such as spotlight on MySpace music, as well a song featured on XLR8R. In addition, I also received a lot of positive feedback right here on the PhilaFlava forum. From making some observations, I see that’s a pretty hard feat to come by so know that I am humbled and greatly appreciative of you guys.

The positive response as whole to the EP was very encouraging and it was a definite confidence booster. Working the EP was pretty much a two man operation with me and Jon emailing folks, blogs, websites – whoever would check out the project. What I was able to accomplish is something I am very proud and it is equally as rewarding, as the results themselves. A long delayed single saw the light of day as well.
I had a couple of unfortunate things happened. But hey, life happens and at times it got the best of me in the worst of ways. I am human and I can admit that. On the flip side there were times where I faced hurdles and shocked myself by the amount of perseverance I had. I have to remember this when times are difficult.

So I guess in the end this year I really learned a lot about myself. I saw what it looked like to realize potential. Even if it was just a glimpse I know it’s possible to really be successful. In 2010 I hope to fully reach my potential in all aspects of my life, and you know of course this means definitely stepping it up with music. This year I got my feet wet, next year I plan to dive right in. And that’s about all I got to say about that.

Oh yeah before i forget, thank you to everyone that believed in me, showed love and support this year. You know who you are…

Best,
Charles/SelfSays
