Meyhem Lauren & Buckwild – Street Hop ft. Troy Ave & RetcH

Might be a petty complaint, but I’m not feeling RetcH’s nasal voice on this at all. Cool song otherwise, Meyhem’s project with Buckwild seems to be shaping up nicely.
J-Love – Glorified Excellence ft. Ghostface Killah & Cormega

As soon as you saw the title, you already knew. J-Love makes good beats and puts together great mixtapes, but as far as rapping… like I said, you already know. He’s not to completely terrible here, just wildly outclassed. When Ghost raps things like ‘Breezly Bruin ice, that’s my new slogan’, you should probably just get out of the way.

Troy Ave has been kinda uneven lately, but this is the kinda song that made Bricks In My Backpack 3 a staple in the summer of 2012. Which bodes well for the upcoming 4th volume of the series.

While we’re here, his take on ‘Move That Dope’ is not too shabby either.

Troy Ave – New York City (Album)

The twitter marketing campaign for this album hinged on claiming it as a paragon of ‘the real New York sound’, but what does that actually mean in 2013? The current NY scene is stylistically fractured, so I’m skeptical of the idea that Troy Ave, or any one rapper in general, can centralize and define it. There is a lot of talent around, but nobody who is simultaneously that good and that influential. Still, I do like Troy Ave’s dead-eyed, cold-hearted coke dealing narratives very much and his stylistic bona fides as New York rapper are clearly legit. So while a claim that this is THE New York album is a bit tenuous, it is nevertheless a very good New York rap record.

Currently the best thing happening in the NY street/thug/coke rap circles (not including Roc Marci in this assessment.)

I have an unreasonable love for people rapping on this beat, so this is instantly my favorite of Troy Ave’s many Keymixes.

Like most compilations, this one has some great songs and some ok songs and songs that suck dick. Here be some that fall into the first two categories. The Troy Ave tracks is probably my favorite of the bunch.
