Is this over a Weeknd song or something? I wouldn’t know, I’m not a fan of that guy at all. Tink continues to get better and better though, and the beat suits him well.

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012
Mostly, The Outfit’s Ramen Noodles EP (lol it’s 17 tracks long) is about getting laid. Occasionally they also go for a ride and listen to music. Naturally a bunch of weed and whatnot is consumed in the process. And that’s fine, they pull all this off well, with easygoing charm and a congenial bird doggin’ attitude that’s not too far off from Devin & The Coughee Brothaz in their prime. But the main strength of the EP is the incredible production, all synth soundscapes and clever chops of obvious samples that reminded me of earlier Block Beattaz work. Even if The Outfit completely sucked at rapping, which they don’t, I think I would’ve still posted this – I like the beats that much.

Killa Cal Wayne – Headed To The Promise Land (mixtape)
Friday, December 30th, 2011
From whatever scarce info I could find, I get the feeling Killa Cal Wayne is something of a minor cult favorite in Texas (parts of it anyway). Very little of his material is available for dl via the usual internet channels, most of what I’ve heard I’ve found through youtube. Those clips show a capable hardcore mixtape rapper, not doing anything particularly new but running that lane well. He’s got the ability, the grit, the menacing attitude, he can actually write a song, and he sports an inspired beat selection without regional biases. He reminds me a bit of Freddie Gibbs around 2009ish, but more serious and more downbeat.
Headed To The Promise Land, released in late 2010, is the only mixtape of his I was able to get a hold of so far, and it’s a good showcase for all those qualities. ‘I’m On’ (the clip at the top) was the lead single from it, streams for a few other included tracks are below. Don’t sleep on ’48 Bars Of Power’ and ‘The Game’, those are my current favorites.

Diggin around various internet points of interest to see what cool shit I might have missed, came across this obscure head nodder from Texas. Couldn’t find a dl link for it, but you can stream this song and a bunch more from his ReverbNation page.

Che$$ – Harlem To Tx Feat A$AP Ferg (Prod By Che$$)
Wednesday, November 9th, 2011
Not sure what direct/indirect affiliation Che$$ has with the A$AP crew beyond soliciting this feature, if any at all. But this is what I imagine a track from a collective A$AP mixtape might sound like. Ferg continues to shine on guest spots.

VIDEO: EDF – Screw History (What Would Screw Do?)

EDF is obviously not the first person to pay tribute to DJ Screw (this one is still my fave), and he definitely wont be the last. But he does do it a lot better than many others.

The Niyat – Recycle Bin (mixtape)
Thursday, April 7th, 2011This mixtape is presented by FWMJ.
Just listen to it, the natural talent at work is plenty obvious. Sure, the ‘us vs the rap industry’ mentality and subject matter are well tread, but The Niyat sells it with a dedicated unyieldingly angry attitude – these guys actually sound like they take this shit personally, instead of chanting protest against mediocrity as an easy catchall mantra. It also helps that unlike MANY other lyrically intensive rappers this group is very proficient at picking beats, with selections just strong enough to avoid plodding but not so distinct as to take the focus away from the words. The mixing of the project is a bit rough, it never surpasses the feel of being a loose collection of tracks, but then again I don’t think they were trying to make a proper album either. It’s more of an exercise in craft than an artistic statement, and as such it’s tremendously entertaining.
Tracklist with production credits is below the jump.
Big Sid & Killer Mike “See You Later”
Thursday, March 31st, 2011
Big Sid is the newest Swisha House guy. His Music, Money and Motivation just came out. He has a song with Killer Mike. Mike kinda kills it. Big Sid is pretty damn nice with it. With a Fam 420 album on the way, Watts & Co. should have a good year.
