We create these Sounds Like The 90s, to share with you new(er) tunes, that we feel represent that 90s hip-hop we love. Listen with an open mind and most importantly, support the artists featured on these Sounds Like The 90s if you like what you hear. 24 is a great number, my favorite number for obvious reasons, so it only made sense to incorporate my childhood idol Rickey Henderson on the cover. Props to dirt_dog for always blessing the artwork. And if you’re a fan of his work, you’ll be happy to know our Certified Dope Apparel is back for a limited time as well. Peace to to all those who continue to support Philaflava, Steady Bloggin and of course, T.R.O.Y.   –Jason Gloss

Follow us on Instagram @Philaflava if you’re feeling nostalgic.
Stay tuned for the return of The Philaflava Show, as we bring you Take It Personal radio dropping this fall.

Apropos The Game Of Thrones Mixtape, Here Be A 4 HRSMN Song

I’m sure Catch The Throne is gonna deliver it’s share of hilarity (it already kinda there). But due to its existence, I feel the need to remember The Four Horsemen (4 HRSMN).

Rightly forgotten by most, 4 HRSMN were a super group consisting of Canibus, Killah Priest, Kurupt, Ras Kass. If you didn’t live through the glory days of late 90s-early 00s underground rap, you probably won’t understand why this seemed like a good idea circa 98-ish. For the purposes of this post, all you need to know is that their song ‘The Horsemen’ (above) is already the top contender for the greatest medieval/fantasy themed rap song of all time. Rap Genius has a transcript of the song’s lyrics, it’s predictably inaccurate but close enough to give you a proper idea of why I hold it such high regard. Daddy Yankee is going to have to strain really hard on those Gasolina:Dragon Fire metaphors to top Canibus’ campaign plan of marching on France.

I know what you’re probably thinking, Game beef again? No, ain’t about Jayceon. This new leftcost banger reminds me of something found on the Below The Heavens album from like Blu & Exile. Real nice vibe and it’s always great to hear Rassy over some jazzy production. If 210West got more heats like this, then that’s an album to definitely be on the look out for. –Philaflava

Canibus – Best of ’97-2000

The best freestyler on the planet. The 2nd 3rd coming of Rakim. The future of hip-hop. He was anointed as them all, and yet as meteoric as Canibus’ rise was, his fall was just as swift. A mixtape phenom, he went from lacing Tony Touch and DJ Clue to collaborating almost exclusively with Myspace rappers on their latest internet-only projects. His career decisions and ultimate downfall may have been disappointing, but they do nothing to tarnish the heights of his apex. In his prime, Canibus was an undisputed animal on the mic. His scientific style, fueled by a swift delivery, made him the standout on almost any track he appeared on, much to the fascination of both fans and peers. Frequently he’d take over songs, rhyming for twice as long as everyone else with double the ferocity, and listeners loved every bar of it.
