A Broadcast Of Violence, Fear Of Death, And Etc (A Memphis Rap Mix By Jacques Gaspard Biberkopf)

“Broadcast of violence, fear of death, and etc.”

So Jacques Gaspard Biberkopf did this mix for the Fresh Out The Box show (on BBox Radio), where I occasionally guest. The mix had no tracklist, and was accompanied only by the quote above. While the mix was playing, the show’s hosts and I sat and gaped at each other in amazement – the set this guy put together is fucking incredible.

I wouldn’t claim myself an expert on Memphis obscurities, far from it, but I’ve heard a few things. My companions were at about the same level of expertise. And yet, a lot most (let’s be honest) of the songs here were unknown to us, and not a single one of them was bad. Several inspired bouts of furious googling, to no effect.

I don’t know where Jacques found this stuff. I don’t actually know anything about Jacques at all. But the mad put together a great mixtape and you should listen to it immediately.

As a bonus to the surprisingly good Ghetto Heaven, MONEYDVNCE turns ‘Get ‘Em Girls’ into some shit that El-P might have made after huffing refrigerator fluid for a week straight. And I mean that in the best way possible.

First there was Yacht Rap, and it was good. Then there was Low Speed Chase, and that was also good. Now comes the next saga in the continuous rap-adventures of Chad. Still aboard Morgengruss X, adrift somewhere in (warm) parts unknown, Mr. Sexington linked up with Messrs. Grizzly and Note of Purple Tape Pedigree/Fresh Out The Box Radio to compile another set of smoothplayalisticyachtmuzik anthems for your enjoyment. So once again, douse the supermodels in Dom Pérignon’52 until their sarongs are see-through and enjoy.

Like his partner in crime Mummz, Boog is a work in progress. But from what I’ve heard he’s progressing fast and in the right direction, so just like Mummz he’s very much worth keeping an eye on.

I’ve only heard a few songs from Wara and as Geng pointed out none of them really sound alike. But I do generally get a positive impression from his music, it seems like he could go on to do good things. We shall see when his album The Ill Street Blues drops on Feb 13. With a title like that he’s got a lot to live up to.

Screwing Yourself To Live: A Chopped & Slowed Tribute To Black Sabbath (Presented By Purple Tape Pedigree and Steady Bloggin’)

We thought up this after we smoked too much weed. Usually these kinds of brilliant flights of fancy evaporate when the haze does, but this one stuck around. We joked about it, then we joked some more, and then suddenly Geng was actually doing it. And now here it is, in all its improbable stoned glory. And it’s fucking awesome.

For all the inherent jokey novelty of the idea, Geng took it very seriously and put a shitload of effort into the execution. Beyond the track selection, it’s his mixing and blending and insistence on perfecting even the most minute details that make this thing work as well as it does. So huge props to him for doing it and letting me be a part of it. Thanks also to John Turner Jr for the cover art, and to Gilla Monsta for some additional dirty work. Enjoy!
