Fuck the skeptics, I’m all aboard with this album. Alc & Prodigy made one of the best NY albums of the 00s, I still enjoy Prodigy even as when he mumbles, and Alchemist is in the midst of something like a personal creative renaissance. And it’s going to have a Roc Marciano feature, among others. I’m optimistic.

Having seen Ev do his thing last week at the Fillmore in Miami I can’t say he’s fronting at all. Cats & Dogs drops on Sept 27th on Rhymesayers. Here is a track with everybody’s favorite new new (not really new) rapper and everybody’s favorite interviewee. Peace to Ev. –Philaflava

Some Highlights From Troy Ave’s “Bricks In My Backpack 2” Mixtape

There is some proper grimey broken-glass-scraping-across-concrete NY rap on Troy Ave’s Bricks In My Backpack 2: Powder To The People, the opening 3 track salvo in particular is very impressive. Unfortunately there’s also some generic filler too. Troy Ave clearly has talent, based on the high points here he deserves the attention, but maybe needs a little more focus. A mixtape that’s all songs like “Motion Picture” and “Dirty Martini” without random songs fo’ da ladiez would be most welcome. More rapping over Doom beats would work too.
