Open Mike Eagle – Rappers Will Die Of Natural Causes

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

Early impression after a couple spins: I think this might be the best written album I’ve heard so far this year. Also, this one is better than Mike’s last one. I would recommend listening a few times while paying close attention, your efforts will be rewarded with lots of cool subtle details you might miss otherwise. That’s all I’m gonna say here for the moment, going more indepth would require a few more plays on my part and possibly a crossover into literary criticism territory (that’s Thun’s job anyway).

Open Mike Eagle – Why Pianos Break (feat. P.O.S.)

Monday, June 6th, 2011

I had fun making this single art the first time I did it. I had less fun doing the MS Paint correction.

I had fun making this song because Taco Neck is a sick producer and P.O.S. makes the great raps.

Some things are free. Some things are streamable. This thing is both.

Open Mike Eagle – Nightmares (Video + mp3)

Saturday, May 7th, 2011

For the past few years the whole LA scene has kinda been, well like the Lakers have been in the NBA playoffs. Every once in awhile a star is born and while this star has been around for a minute, OME’s career continues to shine brighter with each new release. If you’re a frequent member of Philaflava or stay up on dope music then chances are you’ve already seen the video. Just a few days ago we dropped the audio but now Steady B is debuting the MP3 for your iPOD pleasure. Now if the powers that be can make this Homeboy Sandman x OME project happen with production from Blockhead, then the internets can rest peacefully. –Philaflava

Open Mike Eagle – Nightmares (Prod. By Willie Green)

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

I’ve kinda semi-slept on Mike – I generally like the music I’ve heard from him, but never really properly dug into it. It’s probably about time I did so, this song is great. The combination of wit with a super relaxed flow really hits the spot. Mike comes off like that one friend everyone has who is beyond burnt out but is still somehow very smart and funny as hell, and I mean that as a 100% compliment.

Awesome cover too.

SB are big supporters of OME and there is no reason you shouldn’t be too. Peep the latest video and download the new EP below. The LA underground scene has suffered for too many years so when quality shit like this drops you need to pay attention. Peace to Mush Records. –Philaflava

OFWGKTA Oct. 20th Los Angeles Show Review
by Half Black Steady Bloggin’ Correspondant thekeenone

I’m a regular poster and contributor on Philaflava, and often get turned on to new music with that merry band of ignorant internet savages (HLB, what up).

Not too long ago, a thread popped up that posed the question, “Anyone heard of this EARL kid?”

After watching that first video, the entire board was hooked. We noticed we were not alone, and the OFWGKTA hype was spreading across the Internet and spilling over into respectable print publications faster than anyone could imagine, including OFWGKTA themselves.

When the news of the show at Low End was released, everyone was hype as fuck. Would this online phenom translate into a live show? Would people come? Would it turn into a Black Nazi Riot lead by Tyler himself, with Taco screaming “I’m a fuck every bitch in this room!” (that part happened) as he follows the battle charge?

Being an LA resident (sup Venice) I decided to go to the show along with fellow poster and delicious MC in his own right, Open Mike Eagle.

The place was packed. About 250-300 people. Here’s a shot of the crowd before they went on:

There was a nervous tension in the room that Low End host Nocando picked up on as well. We were all waiting to see, first hand, WTF is OFWGKTA?

Finally a bit after 11pm, the show started. Then this happened:
