Ball & G’s new album Ten Toes Down is suprisingly engaging, even if it is just a little too loud at times for what would ideally be country rap storytime with a couple of veteran pimps. This Mo B. Dick production stands out as the album’s best and most age-appropriate track. The album is definitely worth a purchase.
C-Bo and Trae dust off the instrumental for Yo Gotti’s Marvin Gaye sampling “Gangsta Party” with 8Ball and Bun B for C-Bo’s upcoming mixtape with Cartune Network. While the track is certainly cool and noteworthy, the real purpose of this post is to point out how slept-on Memphis-born producer Carlos Broady is in most (all) circles. The guy has crafted some of the most recognizable beats ever (CNN’s T.O.N.Y., Mase’s 24 Hours To Live, Nas’ Project Windows, Ghostface’s The Hilton, Saturday Nite and We Made It, Hobo Junction’s I’ve Been Through It, Lil Kim’s Queen Bitch, Puffy’s Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down, A bunch of tracks on Heist of The Century, half of Yo Gotti’s Back To Basics and pretty much everything non-Primo that Royce has rapped over in the past few years), and he remains under everyone’s radar. Appreciate the versatility.
As Memphis’ Yo Gotti stands on the precipice of mainstream super stardom, now is a great time to familiarize yourself with his early material. While “5 Star Bitch”, his Cocaine Music mixtape series and the forthcoming Live From The Kitchen will serve as Yo Gotti’s introduction to large portion of his future fan base, the guy has been putting out records for a decade-plus.
With the return of Lord Infamous, Lil Jack putting out quality solo tapes again, an absolutely fantastic Manson Family album, Evil Pimp dropping a gem, a great album from Pat, MC Mack’s Pure Ana, Three 6 back to being themselves and C-Rock releasing (and rereleasing) music, its been a great year for fans of Memphis rap.
C-Rock goes for broke on this one, with verses from All $tar, Kingpin Skinny Pimp, T-Rock, Mr. Sche, Trae and even milk carton model Fabo. Some of the songs get a bit flossy and the tongue-twisting flows take a backseat (“We Ride” is insane though and this Smoke dude nails it throughout), but this is a C-Rock album at heart (as the tracks below prove beyond a shadow of a doubt). Check it out and cough up the 8 bucks at IAP.
