Cities Aviv – Flex Your Gold

Monday, February 6th, 2012

Sounds like when your neighbors upstairs are doing drugs and blasting music at 3am and you’re torn between joining in or asking them to turn it down. If you’re more likely to join them, this song is for you.

Murdered In Memphis

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

Nattymari + SortaHuman + Kreayshawn + Dirty Tape Hiss Memphis Beats = One of the coolest releases of 2011. According to Nattymari, this was originally intended to be a Kreayshawn/V-Nasty affair, but Kreayshawn kinda got busy… so SupaHuman stepped in and knocked this shit out of the park. Nattymari deserves tremendous props for putting something like this together. You gotta love when great ideas end up being executed with perfection.

VIDEO: Project Pat & Corporate MOB “Waffle House”

Monday, July 18th, 2011

Andre Nickatina and Zaytoven collaborated last year on the fairly awesome “Waffle House”, but Pat and Corporate MOB keep things a bit more topical here and we all benefit. Can’t wait to see this jamm next to all of the Buckner and Garcia heaterz that I can’t help but play every time I stumble in. Shouts to K. Camp too.

Project Pat “I Play Dope Boy”

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

Favorite track from Pat’s solid but unspectacular Loud Pack. Its always nice to hear the signature Superproducer “ah haah” and “mafia” chants as well as some “playmesompimpinmann”, but I think its time for Pat to link up with some new forward-thinking producers who can push his flow out of the comfort zone.

T-Rock & Kingpin Skinny Pimp “Poppin’ Rubberbands (Remix)”

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

I would do bad things to good people to get a full album’s worth of tracks from these two over some faux-Luger loud shit.

Kingpin Skinny Pimp Ain’t Flaugin’

The father of Soulja’s Boys best styles, Kingpin Skinny Pimp is back with Street Mix 2. The first one featured Memphis hiss tape legends like K-Rock, Gangsta Blac, Lil Gin, AK & Z-Dog. This time the big surprise is Killer from Ski Mask Boyz. Lord Infamous (on an awesome Minnie Ripperton jam), Crunchy Black and DJ Zirk also make appearances. Its always cool to see anyone acknowledge that era in Memphis rap. You’ll either dig this stuff and know why… or you won’t.

Soulja Boy & Tyga “Be Quiet”

Monday, August 9th, 2010

One of my favorite pieces of recent rap minutiae has been Soulja Boy’s discovery of 90′s Memphis rap. For a while he has been building toward a full-on use of the style and it seems like he has settled into it when he isn’t cheffing it up with Lil B. The initial acknowledgement of the adaptation came on “My Clientele”, where SB drops a Kingpin Skinny Pimp reference (while pretty much rocking his style [and voice]). On “Be Quiet” with the venerable Tyga, his first verse is all out Yall Aint No Killaz. One more step towards (critical?) legitmacy for Soulja Boy or just a result of some uncle telling the kid he sounds like KSP? I’m A-OK with being the only person who cares about this, by the way.

8Ball & MJG “Right Now”

Ball & G’s new album Ten Toes Down is suprisingly engaging, even if it is just a little too loud at times for what would ideally be country rap storytime with a couple of veteran pimps. This Mo B. Dick production stands out as the album’s best and most age-appropriate track. The album is definitely worth a purchase.

C-Bo & Trae “White Walls”

p&Cbo

C-Bo and Trae dust off the instrumental for Yo Gotti’s Marvin Gaye sampling “Gangsta Party” with 8Ball and Bun B for C-Bo’s upcoming mixtape with Cartune Network. While the track is certainly cool and noteworthy, the real purpose of this post is to point out how slept-on Memphis-born producer Carlos Broady is in most (all) circles. The guy has crafted some of the most recognizable beats ever (CNN’s T.O.N.Y., Mase’s 24 Hours To Live, Nas’ Project Windows, Ghostface’s The Hilton, Saturday Nite and We Made It, Hobo Junction’s I’ve Been Through It, Lil Kim’s Queen Bitch, Puffy’s Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down, A bunch of tracks on Heist of The Century, half of Yo Gotti’s Back To Basics and pretty much everything non-Primo that Royce has rapped over in the past few years), and he remains under everyone’s radar. Appreciate the versatility.
