Jeremiah Jae – Eating Donuts & Other Refined Foods (mixtape)

Monday, November 15th, 2010

Better than most other mixtapes drawing on Dilla’s Donuts, mainly because it’s not meant as an overt tribute or eulogy. Instead (Brainfeeder affliate) Jeremiah Jae respectfully subverts Dilla’s work for his own means, combining it with Madlib beats and Flying Lotus beats and his own productions to create a skeleton framework for a collage-like rap experiment reminiscent of The Further Adventures Of Lord Quas and The Ecstatic. Not everything here works but the highlights are impressive, and I say this as somebody who’s not generally a Brainfeeder fan. NOTE: this mixtape sounds best on headphones.

This is my favorite track on here, videos for some other songs on the tape are below the jump:

Ace Creator (Tyler) – Cult Shit

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

Tyler going over Madlib’s ‘Stepping into tomorrow’ from the Shades of Blue album, which to me is still Madlib’s best instrumental album to date. The full long version of the instrumental is embedded above.

Just for the fuck of it, below the jump you’ll find some footage of Tyler and Bon Bon destroying an LRG Sidekick with a samurai sword and a razor scooter (thanks Icedawg).

Mowjoe – “Without You” and “Pushing Buttons”

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

I get that ubiquitous penis tingle whenever I stumble across a new beat maker with viable talent. In the course of my spiritual sample seshes it is impossible to not pay attention to the often blatant Dillabiting. And while it is my opinion that most cats plain copy Dilla (Madlib too), a few of them attempt to take the building blocks Dilla left behind and turn them into something new and unrealized. Mowjoe seems to fit into that category.

“How are you going to be around me and not smoke?”

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

“How are you going to be around me and not smoke? That’s like being around George Clinton and not smoking the rock,” he jokes, producing the sequoia-colored pot, the kind of cosmic chronic that will have you visualizing Ewoks and light sabers, and composing blunted beat orchestras in your head. Or not. Since technology made it possible to acquire production software FruityLoops and an omnivore’s musical library in 24 hours, everyone’s been chopping samples. But Madlib has proven that it isn’t about collection or studio tools.

“The equipment doesn’t matter, it’s the vibe you put into it. If music sounds good, music sounds good,”

From LA Weekly’s The Madlib Mystique. Thorough read.

Percee P’s Picturebooks

May 03, 2010

The monarch of the subterranean, legendary lethal lyricist, rhyme inspector emcee Percee P stopped through the office this afternoon with news that he lost some of his fabled photo books chronicling his years on the grind in NYC. Fortunately, for reasons no one can remember, we scanned one of those books a few years ago, so we got a few of the pics back to Percee – and here’s some for everyone else to see.

A load of classic flicks can be found here.

Madlib and Dave Cooley

Dave Cooley:

Madlib works a lot from mono loops, so this is a challenge.

From an old, but engaging, Remix Mag interview. Madlib shares a few of the secrets behind The Further Adventures of Lord Quas.
