K-Def – Supa Heath (LP Version)

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

If you like rap and have a pulse, you’ll recognize what’s going on here exactly 42 seconds after you hit play (maybe sooner if you’re an advanced rap nerd). The twist is that K-Def didn’t actually use any samples here, he played/interpolated everything himself. Which I guess in a way makes this more of a jazz cover than a traditional instrumental hiphop beat.

The track is taken from K-Def’s upcoming Night Shift album, out this December on Redefinition Records.

K-Def – Times Change

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

“Times Change” is the B-Side to K-Def’s upcoming 7″ single (“For Def’s Sake”) on Redefinition Records. This track is especially notable for it’s unique arrangement which continuously morphs into new patterns & sequences as Def introduces a variety sounds in a masterful fashion, all the way until the track fades out. As a friend pointed out today, K-Def does tend to use a lot of well tread samples. To his credit, most of the time he pulls it off in a way that doesn’t make you cringe and go ‘fuck this, I’ve heard it a million times before.’ Which isn’t to say that he always comes up with a new and original flip that completely re-invigorates or re-contextualizes the popular break, rather always he manages to spotlight the elements that make original sample source so appealing to begin with. To quote (or possibly misquote) Count Bass D: its not about the records you have, its about what you can do with them.

K-Def – I Prayed

Monday, June 27th, 2011

Something from K-Def’s Gangster Instrumentals, which somehow came out completely under my radar. This beat was originally used on K-Def’s re-imagining of Jay-Z’s American Gangster.

While looking around at related internet locations I found this piece of news on the Redefinition Records blog: “K-def’s (MOSTLY INSTRUMENTAL) project with Redef is coming soon.” Considering how great Willie Bobo The Fool was, I’m expecting big things here.

Nas – It Was Remixed

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

Last week we showed you how many classic verses Nas racked up over the course of 20 years, but did you know he’s also featured on some pretty great remixes too? Here’s a collection of the best. Breakdowns, tracklisting and download link after the jump.

Nas: The Remixes (Day Four)

Nas – Street Dreams (K-Def)

MPC wiz and protégé of Marley Marl, K-Def’s jazzy mix quickens the pace and throws in his trademark drum patterns. Not only a fantastic remix, it’s notable if only for K being the antithesis of Trackmasters. Wasn’t it great when a producer could flip an original and make you feel like you were listening to an entirely different song?

Nas – The World Is Yours (DJ Hollywood)

Popped up on DJ Mike Nice’s Please Listen To My Demo mixtape from 2008. The second verse is Nas at his finest, it’s a shame he never revisited these unused lyrics.

Nas – Stillmatic Intro (Soul Supreme)

Fantastic usage of The Moments’ “What Is Your Name” sample. Any beat that can go up against the Hangmen 3 original should be applauded.

Nas – Halftime (Butcher)

DJ Bubie sticks fairly close to the script on this one opting to maintain the original drum rhythms while fusing in a latin feel.

Nas – Bridging the Gap (Marley Marl)

Queensbridge’s finest producer and emcee on the same track. Nice horns. I forget which 80s track used this break, answers on a postcard please.
