2 Chainz – One Day At A Time Ft. Jadakiss

Friday, October 21st, 2011

Turtle power didn’t activate as hard as I hoped on this one, but it’s pretty good none the less. Regional crossover collaborations should happen more often.

And the best rapper is…

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

Let’s be specific (peace Funkmaster Flex), the other day I dropped my 10 most underrated rappers of 2011, so it only made sense to drop my best rapper too. This isn’t an all-time list, it’s current and I could only award this to a rapper who is, well current. Andre 3000, you might be on another level and universally accepted as the greatest rapper living and who am I to disagree? You are, but these once every few years cameos on these bullshit R&B tracks ain’t cutting it.

It ain’t Jay, shame on you for even thinking that. It isn’t his apprentice Mr. Electronica, who by the way he should be dropping his once-a-year track in December to continue giving your iTunes blue balls. His lack of new material and a Saigon(ish) career pattern is not helping matters. I can you assure you it’s nobody who would rock a smedium t-shirt. Nobody that you would consider a hipster or vegan. It isn’t a new radical skater. It isn’t lazy self-absorbed artists who continues to produce lo-fi albums for your listening displeasure.

Who does it leave then? Nas, maybe, but we all know he lost a step or two over the years. Could it be Jada? Sure, Jadakiss is like the New York Jets, he looks great on paper but when it comes down to business he can’t close and I’m still waiting on that great album from him. So the argument could come down to Pusha and the man who I awarded it to. Pusha is just getting better with age, but when you see who is #1 it’s hard to dispute facts.

Maybe 2012 will be different but there isn’t a rapper IMO who has deliverer quality time and time again than this man. I hate the word swag, so I will just say this man’s style is just too damn cool. It sounds effortless like the way DOOM spits, but it’s extremely layered with witty lyricism and tons of rewind material   If the Dos Equis guy was a rapper he’d be this one. –Philaflava

Nate Dogg – Nobody Does It Better

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

If Dre was the sound of G-Funk and Snoop was voice, then Nate Dogg was surely the harmony. Tying together lush production and smooth vocals with his rich, raspy melodies, Nate brought a defining quality to the music. Raised as a gospel singer in East Long Beach, he crashed onto the regional scene with his work on Mista Grimm’s “Indo Smoke” and Dr. Dre’s “Lil’ Ghetto Boy,” but it was his appearance alongside Warren G on “Regulate” that pushed him into the national spotlight. When Death Row Records collapsed under it’s own misdeeds, he took his talents from coast to coast, never failing to impress as the go to guy for that Californian vibe whilst giving career defining hits to the likes of Ludacris, Fabolous and 50 Cent. Many have tried to imitate him and some have even tried to snatch the crown as the king of the rap hook, but to no avail. They can come closer than close. Original they never could be.

Beanie Sigel – What You Talkin About Live w/Jadakiss

Monday, December 21st, 2009

I’m a huge Beanie Mac fan. No Philly bias but I swear sometimes he looks and raps to another dude like he wants to kiss him. Remember that video where he was just lusting over Peedi? Peep this while his weed carriers fawn over his every word and Jadakiss is looking awfully uncomfortable. –Philaflava

These are my thoughts, yo!

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

No links. No embedded clips. These are just my thoughts, yo! –Philaflava

(Amerie has noting to do with this post. I just like to look at her)

10. This years version of Blu (every blogs favorite rapper) is Freddie Gibbs. Pill made noise too but he’ll probably be next years Freddie Gibbs once the others catch on.

09. Cam’Ron better bring it this year and stop being chintzy with beats. Nobody wants to hear him rap over generic beats again. Save that for Hell Rell.

08. Anyone else feel bad that Dres from Black Sheep now has to go by “Black Sheep Dres” to make a comeback? Sad when you think about it. Remember when Blahzay Blahzay’s OutLoud tried to make a comeback a few years ago and renamed himself “Blahzay Blah?”

07. Rappers should take cues from MF Doom. Don’t Seth Rogen yourself. Disappear for a few years and then comeback with heat.

06. Ras Kass just doesn’t get it. He never will.

05. If Gang Starr is never going to happen can Premier at least link up with somebody that won’t waste his beats? How about an entire album with Devin The Dude or even Cormega?

04. Jadakiss will never drop an album that matches his potential. He will always be a guest appearance guy.

03. Tiger Woods will be the most name-dropped athlete in 2010 and if I was a betting man Budden will probably reference him first.

02. The new Clipse album Til the Casket Drops is not that good. It contains unnecessary hooks, dumb downed lyrics and Timberland knock-off beats. Rick Rubin never would have allowed this album to come out. Pharrell did not bring it, Khalil did.

01. For a guy who hasn’t dropped an album in years, it’s pretty impressive that Big Boi has managed to make the best songs for the last two years (Royal Flush, Shine Blockas, Fo Yo Sorrows)

Nas: The Remixes (Day Two)

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

Nas

Back at it like a crack addict, Day Two.

Nas – The World Is Yours (Q-Tip)

Dirty basement jazz courtesy of Kamaal. Some Nas fans will tell you his 2nd verse on here might just be one of his best. “Switch the flow speed, I’m gettin’ vexed/ Guiliani is 6-6-6.” Can’t hate on that.

Nas – Street Dreams (R Kelly)

Released a month or so after the original, this mix featured completely different lyrics and production. Armed with a superb mini-story in the third verse, the lyricism is much more introspective with its cautionary tales for wannabe ballers. The R Kelly hook melds perfectly with the new beat making it one of the more memorable Nas joints to run some R&B.

Nas – Family (Cloudkickers)

Cloudkickers are DJ Eli and Shan Boogs, perhaps best known for their self titled Fondle ‘Em EP that dropped back in ’99. An assortment of strings and keys lace this one up nicely.

Nas – Made You Look (Single Remix)

Luda and Jadakiss join Nas to remix the song of the year. I need it from the top, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Kiss steals the show as usual. File Nas’s verse alongside his rhyme on “We Major” under ‘really? That’s the best you could fucking come up with?’

Nas – Life’s a Bitch (Buckwild)

The DITC crate-master gives Q-Tip a run for his money with this jazzed out piece of wonderful. Some nice cuts at the end too.

Rakim ft/ Jadakiss – Euphoria

Rakim

Maybe the Seventh Seal is actually gonna be released? Let’s hope.
