Fuck yeah, I’ve been waiting for this to surface for a while. The Ensemble have been doing this cover live (with and without Mos Def) for some time, and now here it is in properly recorded form.
DOWNLOAD: Hypnotic Brass Ensemble – Rainbows (Madvillain cover)
The latest EP by the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble includes instrumental covers of Outkast’s ‘SpottieOttieDopaliscious’ and Madvillain’s ‘Rainbows’. To be honest I’m more interested in the Madvillain one, I’ve wanted to hear a good quality version of this cover ever since seeing videos of the Ensemble performing it live (sometimes with Mos Def on vocals). The original track is built around a jazz sample so a re-interpretation by a jazz band is basically a no-brainer. Unfortunately I can’t find that one anywhere (yet).
Mind you the Outkast track is not bad by any means, it’s great actually. And since that’s the one that was leaked for promo purposes, that’s the one you get.
