Thundercat – $200 TB Ft. Austin Peralta

Friday, October 21st, 2011

Thundercat’s and Peralta’s solos are both high on the list of my favorite albums released this year, so this is mandatory/compulsive posting. The rest of today will be spent trying to get a hold of the Japan-only version of Golden Age Of Apocalypse this song is taken from. Never mind, I found a link for it and it looks like ‘$200TB’ is the only track here not included in the US version.

BADBADNOTGOOD – Fall In Love (J Dilla Cover)

Wednesday, September 7th, 2011

Awww shit, I missed a new BADBADNOTGOOD (formerly The Odd Trio) cover. This time they jazzify Dilla’s “Fall In Love”, which historically has lent itself well to this sort of re-interpretation.

BADBADNOTGOOD, formerly The Odd Trio, continues killin’ it on the jazz cover side of things. Branching out beyond Odd Future’s catalog for songs to cover was/is a great idea. Hopefully that is actually really a hint at a future DOOM cover in the end of this vid.

Jeremiah Jae – Eating Donuts & Other Refined Foods (mixtape)

Monday, November 15th, 2010

Better than most other mixtapes drawing on Dilla’s Donuts, mainly because it’s not meant as an overt tribute or eulogy. Instead (Brainfeeder affliate) Jeremiah Jae respectfully subverts Dilla’s work for his own means, combining it with Madlib beats and Flying Lotus beats and his own productions to create a skeleton framework for a collage-like rap experiment reminiscent of The Further Adventures Of Lord Quas and The Ecstatic. Not everything here works but the highlights are impressive, and I say this as somebody who’s not generally a Brainfeeder fan. NOTE: this mixtape sounds best on headphones.

This is my favorite track on here, videos for some other songs on the tape are below the jump:

J Dilla / Flying Lotus / Farnell Newton – Fall in Love (trumpet rework)

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

This is, for lack of a better word, gorgeous. One more example of how Dilla’s music has lend itself to some great live/organic reinterpretations.

UPDATE: got a download link for you now, courtesy of Farnell Newton himself (thanks).

Northern Lights – Cypher Complete (prod by Flying Lotus)

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

I’m not really a fan of Flying Lotus’ solo work, nor do I know anything about the Northern Lights. However I do enjoy people rapping over Flying Lotus production, especially when it’s done proficiently as is the case here. So here you go…

<a onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/northernlightsspark.bandcamp.com/track/cipher-complete-produced-by-flying-lotus');" href="http://northernlightsspark.bandcamp.com/track/cipher-complete-produced-by-flying-lotus">Cipher Complete (Produced By Flying Lotus) by Northern Lights</a>

You can check out more Northern Lights on their bandcamp page, where they’re giving away this whole mixtape for free.

Busdriver – “Man Baby” (Prod. by Flying Lotus)

L.A.’s resident tornado, via GG, treats us to a taste (nh) of his looming mixtape Computer Cookies. In his trademark, fantastical fashion, he spins syllables and steady rips shit.
