DJ Fresh + Mr Tower – Hella Songs

Monday, July 12th, 2010

DJ Fresh is a good producer. Mr Tower is a good rapper/producer from The Whole Shabang collective, with a voice so low that it occasionally dips into Barry White territory. Mr Tower sounds really good rapping over DJ Fresh’s beats. That’s pretty much all you need to know here. You can listen to the mixtape via the handy bandcamp widget, the download link is below.

VIDEO: Yukmouth “Grittin”

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

Here is the first taste of Yukmouth’s edition of DJ Fresh’s Tonite Show series. The beat is understated, but this should be a fantastic tape. It’ll be nice to hear Yukmouth over unified, quality production.

Beeda Weeda “Bassrock Babies”

A couple years back DJ Fresh and Beeda Weeda recorded an album. For whatever reason, it never saw the light of day… until now. With both of these guys establishing themselves as masters of their craft in the current Bay scene it only make sense to air this stuff out. This is the first leak. The full album should be available for free download sometime in May. Beeda’s Turfology 102 should be big too.

VIDEO: The Grouch “Whatever I Say”

First video from Grouch’s Three Eyes Off The Time. Terrible cover, great record. DJ Fresh really outdid himself.

Young Gully ‘The Tonite Show’

As usual, DJ Fresh and company come through with an outstanding mix of thick funk and hardness with the production, but Young Gully takes the Tonite Show series to new heights with his performance. His raps have an east coast lyrically lyrical street aesthetic at times that will surely broaden his appeal, but his style is grounded in Bay mobb shit. The most impressive aspect of Gully’s act is his ability to maintain such a high-paced flow with minimal filler. This guy is going to be a big deal.

Tonite Show 2 Pack: Quinn vs. Mess

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

San Quinn and Messy Marv are in the midst of a tiff and both just released Tonite Show mixtapes with DJ Fresh. Both go quite hard. I am biased toward Quinn, but his tape is especially nice. Fresh and The Whole Shabang provide outstanding beats, as usual. Check em out

DJ Fresh’s The Tonight Show

Stack Panels Front

DJ Fresh’s Tonight Show mixtape series has been a great showcase for both his production and select Bay emcees. With tapes from Messy Marv and San Quinn on the way, you should start paying attention. The Album is a culmination of the series thus far with new tracks from everyone who is anyone in the Bay. Fresh’s diverse production style is emphasized by his choice of emcees. Jacka, E-40, Eligh, Murs, J. Stalin, Raekwon (re-used song from Doey Rock’s great album), and Kool G Rap all sound at home on his beats. The only skipper here is “Grown and Sex Me” by Digital Underground’s Money B (go figure…). Livewire Gang + Living Legends is a good look, by the way.
