K-Def – Times Change

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

“Times Change” is the B-Side to K-Def’s upcoming 7″ single (“For Def’s Sake”) on Redefinition Records. This track is especially notable for it’s unique arrangement which continuously morphs into new patterns & sequences as Def introduces a variety sounds in a masterful fashion, all the way until the track fades out. As a friend pointed out today, K-Def does tend to use a lot of well tread samples. To his credit, most of the time he pulls it off in a way that doesn’t make you cringe and go ‘fuck this, I’ve heard it a million times before.’ Which isn’t to say that he always comes up with a new and original flip that completely re-invigorates or re-contextualizes the popular break, rather always he manages to spotlight the elements that make original sample source so appealing to begin with. To quote (or possibly misquote) Count Bass D: its not about the records you have, its about what you can do with them.

Count Bass D – Drip Splatter (Prod By Alex B)

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

Random find, never even knew this existed… It’s is about a year old, taken from Alex B’s Moments album. Alex B’s production falls somewhere in the Flying Lotus/Brainfeeder ballpark, which isn’t a sound I would usually associate with the Count but the warm crackly synthy fuzz we get here suits his detached style well.

Count rarely dissapoints.

Separate but related thought…. Top 5 favorite ‘Cult rappers’ (concept I’m loosely defining as analogous to cult movies/cult directors): Count Bass D, Breeze Brewin, Thirstin Howl, Godfather Don, RA The Rugged Man. Honorable mention to Marq Spekt.

Another dope entry into the beat bottle. Repetitive at points, but he picks up where he left off immediately. A nice cameo from Count Bass D. doesn’t hurt either.
