Dj Cunta (Of O’Third Ent) – U-Turn ft R.Dot

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

A standout track from O’Third’s new Family Ties album. The album has a bunch of good stuff (some of which I already posted actually), but I wanted to single this one out specifically as both Cunta and Dizzle exceed expectations here.

O’Third Ent – Flashing Lights

Not crazy about the singing parts to be honest, but Zilla’s badbitchitis trumps all complaints. O’Third’s Family Times is coming October 3rd, the tracklist is below.

G-Side – I’m Sorry (Jake One Remix)

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

I’m slightly torn here.

On the one hand, Jake One’s beat is very good. The drums are heavy, and much like on Bossman’s original version the vocal harmony is used as a musical instrument to great effect.

But on the other hand, there’s a certain mis-match in vibe. The heavy drums ground the song, give it a an immediacy that’s just slightly at odds with the starry-eyed lyrics and the astral feel that permeates both the album version and much of the rest of G-Side oeuvre. Simply put, this isn’t spacey enough.

Granted, this is supposed to be a re-interpretation and not a re-tread, so in that light the remix unquestionably succeeds. Maybe I’m just too attached to the original to accept Jake One’s version on it own terms.

BossMan – BossMan Beats Volume 1 (STREAM)

Friday, June 17th, 2011

BossMan has a pretty solid resume of beats under the SMS/O’Third Ent banner. I think his first really notable work was on G-Side’s ‘#I’mSorry’, and since then he has made some impressive contributions to the Huntsville scene (some of which we posted). This guy is definitely a worthy addition to a label that build its reputation around top-notch production.

Judging by the 200$ pricetag, I’m fairly certain that this small collection of insturmentals was posted for sales/promotional purposes, meant to be bought and rapped over. But they’re also strong enough to stand on their own without vocals, so I figured it was worth a post. The expansive spacey vibe shows traces of a Block Beattaz influence, nothing wrong with that at all.

PS: In general, SMS needs to release more instrumentals.

O’Third Ent. – Look At Me Now ft ST and Kristmas (prod by Bossman)

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

Here’s another good example of how O’Third Ent. is becoming a force both in their own right and as part of the SMS stable. Check out their In The Box Mixtape for more. Their next project Next Day Air should be coming soon.

This is dedicated to Mrs. Forsythe who told my mama I would either be a drug dealer or a factory worker based of them BS state test. This also dedicated to anybody else who said I wouldn’t be sh*t. Hopefully you can take this as your motivation to keep pressing as well.

Bentley – I know / Kristmas – Why I Wanna

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

Today we conclude the promotional portion of DB49 week with two exclusive solo DB49′er efforts, one from Bentley and one from Kristmas. DB49′s debut album Happy Hour drops tomorrow, you might as well start pre-gaming now. The album is conveniently free, so you have more money to spend on beer and weed and DB49 merch or whatever you like to get fucked up on. As of post time it’s around 9 only in certain parts of Europe and Africa, the rest of you got no excuse.

First up alphabetically we got Bentley’s I Know. The song is a slightly off-kilter/drunken take on typical rapper/r&b chick collaborations, dedicated to the universal subject of bitches. You get a nice mellow nod-inducing beat from Mr. Beatnik, two hilarious Bentley verses as bookends, and some sweet crooning from guest songstress Ahu in the middle (her phrasing of ‘I know all the bitches’ is profoundly bonerrific). There’s also a nice little bit reminiscent of the ‘vertical hold’ gag from The Man On The Moon, you’ll know it when you hear it.

Next we got Why I Wanna from Kristmas. Here Professor Kristmas gets his Harvard on to give a 301 level class about the in and outs of the W2 Boy philosophy, with detailed arguments and examples and an appropriate soundbite from ATL to drive the point home. The song was co-produced by Bossman and R.Dot. It premiered officially last night on Baller’s Eve radio.

Big thanks to Codie G for blessing us with the exclusives. Art credits go to Bentley (who came up with the idea for the pic above) and John Turner Jr (who brought it to life).
