Watch How The People Dancing – Unity Sounds From The London Dancehall 86-89

watch

Warm weather hit the North East this weekend like a mid-coital slap from a big breasted girl riding on top. As these things usually go, the sunshine forced me to lift the self-imposed winter reggae ban in favor of some irie shit. This was the specific irie shit I chose for the occasion.

The title pretty much says it all – this is a collection of obscure British dancehall singles released on the Unity Sounds label in the mid-late 80s. Deceptively simple digital production dictates the sound, these producers amply demonstrate how some bass and Casio drums can go a loooong way. The singing and the toasting is not too shabby either. Parallels to early electro Hip-Hop are easily apparent, as are the influences on later permutations of ragga. As usual with these things, versions are included.

A few samples:

Selah Collins – Pick a sound

Richie Davis – Lean Boots

Kennie Knots – Ring my number

Wu-Tang VS The Golden Phoenix (RZA’s movie trailer)

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

I could geek off for a while on various things in this little clip, but still…. I’ll mercifully spare you the 70 paragraph essay which would be the result.

Apparently there was another, longer trailer for this last year that I somehow missed, you can see it below.

All thanks to When Art Imitates Life and Grandgood.

BTW, I still have faith that the Bobby Digital movie will surface one day. I don’t even expect it to be good, I just want to see RZA beat people up with a hockey stick. A cleaned up version of the now 15 year old (!!!!) trailer for it popped up on youtube in late November with a tag “Coming Soon To DVD”, fingers crossed. Here it is for nostalgia’s sake.

Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears – Snatch it back and hold it (unreleased Junior Wells cover)

blackjoe

I saw Black Joe play the Bowery last week, as expected he tore shit down. If you get a chance to see him live don’t miss it, especially on this tour while he is accompanied by Cedric Burnside and Lightning Malcolm (that’s gonna be a whole another blog post).

My one and only disappointment with this show – they weren’t selling Black Joe’s/Honeybears older super rare self titled albums. I’ve been trying to track down Black Joe Lewis and Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears for a while now with no luck. If anybody could help out in that regard I would be much obliged. You can have Alaska for a day as compensation for your efforts. He raps good and does windows, amongst other things.

Meanwhile, here is an unreleased track from them that popped up as part of their Daytrotter Session.

s.maharba – s/t

2679026148-1

S.maharba’s very short self titled cassette album/beat tape plays like a fortuitous collision of two distinct forces. The first is a pronounced Hip-Hop influence which shows itself in heavily thumping drum programming, with stylistic nods to various specific producers scattered throughout. The second is the modern trend toward embracing a general low-fi aesthetic, i.e. making music sound like it was recorded on a battered Walkman from 1988. This trend manifests here in layers of distortion and disembodied samples sounding like they’re being played somewhere in the Mariana Trench and of course that ubiquitous fuzzy crackling sound made by a vinyl record. There are also a few sexy vocal samples of a girl talking in French that wouldn’t feel out of place on a Bobby Digital album.

All that combines into something which would probably fall under the ever cringe-worthy ‘progressive’ classification. Usually music under this moniker doesn’t move me, I don’t even like that Flying Lotus album everybody went crazy for. But this one right here hits the spot nicely.

thugnificent boondocks

This is something that will only appeal to the fans of the Boondocks tv show, if that’s not you then you’re shit out of luck.

The post title pretty much says it all. Some unheralded internet genius took the time to chop and screw Thugnificent’s Granddad ethering. Go Web2.0 go. There was even a download link to go along with the youtube clip.

In case you forgot what the original sounds like, here is that one too.

Now go step your pool game up.
