Rast RFC – The Good, The Bad and Me / Forgive Me

I’ve been meaning to post something by Rast RFC for a bit now, this is as good a place to start as any. The recently emerging NY rapper got a bit of exposure via Egotripland, but there isn’t much information about him otherwise. His style is deceptively old school; he is clearly inspired by the golden age of rap but on his most interesting songs he also shows a willingness to experiment with the classic template and add new elements to it. As such his work inevitably reminds me of Roc Marciano, Ka, A.G.’s recent work with Ray West, and $amhill. Rast seems like a part of the same breed, an older head who in these stylistically decentralized times manages to distill the DNA of New York rap to it’s barest essence and then adorn it with his own personal embellishments.
‘The Good, The Bad and Me’ and ‘Forgive Me’ are two good examples of his music that so far stood out to me more than the rest. Both grabbed me with a certain melodic quality that I can’t really describe well, but I think if you give them a chance you’ll know what I mean. There are also plenty more to sample on his YouTube and Soundcloud accounts.

S/O to twitter friend pyramids on mars for first bringing Rast to my attention.
