Recorded during the same sessions as .L.W.H.’s sophomore LP “CIA TV”, “VT AIC: CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION” demonstrates the deep range of vocal styles and musical detours he took during the process. Perhaps more adventurous and certainly wider in scope, the mixtape (don’t call it an album!) finds .L.W.H. exploring deeply: unquantized MPC bangers, majestic dream pop, simmering Texan post-rock, proto-punk vocal wailing, and the mindbending futurist funk that has become a staple of his hip-hop production all come into play. It features guest spots from frequent collaborator Astrronomy, a remix for his production partner Julian Wass’ pop band Fol Chen, and a bonus jam to conclude it all featuring Mondre M.A.N. of Main Attrakionz. For those interested in the wide-ranging musical impulses and experiments of .L.W.H. beyond his official output, you now have your tape.
Not much I could add to the description above, but here’s why I personally enjoyed this tape: On paper it seems like it could be a massive clusterfuck, but when you play it through somehow it works. The disparate genres don’t clash, instead they actually compliment each other and the progression from one to the next is surprisingly smooth. .L.W.H. himself is the pin that holds it all together, in an auteurist kind of way. Regardless of how different individual songs sound they all feel like they’re coming from the same creative source. And their sum total is one of the more unique and interesting artist-originated mixtapes I’ve heard in some time. Enjoy.
