This looks like the coolest thing since… Machete (too soon?) It’s amazing how much a good actor can do for a movie… here you got buckets and buckets of the cinematic splatter we love so much, but it’s really the gravity that the perpetually underrated Rutger Hauer brings to the proceedings that makes the trailer work so well.

Friday, September 3rd, 2010Steve Arrington – I be trippin (produced by Dam-Funk)
Thursday, September 2nd, 2010Here we have the first taste of the much lauded collaboration between Dam-Funk and former Slave frontman/all around 80s funk powerhouse Steve Arrington. It’s as good as I expected it to be, this pairing just makes too much sense to yield a bad result. I was hoping for maybe something bit more spacey ala Dam’s solo work, but that’s really a minor gripe. This album is now officially upgraded from ‘anticipated’ to ‘can’t wait for this shit to drop’ (hopefully it won’t be too stingy on the keytar solos.) Extra thought.. Arrington singing on a Master Blazter song would be epic.

This song was taken from Stones Throw’s very generous 2010 sampler Clouds Over The Pacific. The photo above was taken from Matthew Scott’s blog, go there to see more of his work from this session.
A little bonus video footage of Steve and Dam Funk performing live is below.

An excellent live rendition of my one of my favorite songs of 2009, looser and jammier than the album version. So good I had to rip the audio. According to this interview the group should have another album out in December, which is something to look forward to.

The visual accompaniment to the anthemic Somebody, directed by ST Trillsburge. Some context and commentary courtesy of Codie G:
This video was shot in the same neighborhood as Antione Dodson a few days before all his viral bonanza started. It’s great that it’s coming out after that because this is our version of what’s going down in Huntsville. We have highlighted over the years so much of what’s makes this city such as NASA, Redstone Arsenal, etc but this is the first time we dove into the gentrification going on in our city i.e. the Starshipz and Rocketz cover. Well this is the first video.
The contrast in this is the two schools shown and the two sets of housing projects. One we show the past, Boarded up schools and projects to a school that just closed down “For Sale” to a housing project on the chopping block for closure. The mural is from library satellite in another housing projects, Mason Court. The irony in this work of art is it’s hidden from the major thoroughfare running parallel to the library for the world to see. I call it hidden hope. With that said i give you the “Somebody” video
One detail about the video I want to point out – note that everyone is holding microphones. This is a clever touch that connects the dots between documentary and performance aspects of the video, underscoring the song’s compelling relationship of medium and message. Props to whoever came up with that idea.

VIDEO: MF Borat – Rescue Khazakstan
Monday, August 23rd, 2010The mashup itself is sloppy and fairly mediocre (just my opinion of course, it seemed to have some legs with the internet at large), but the video for it is surprisingly clever and effective. Bonus points for tiny instances of meta-meta-referencing like the stop-motion blunt rolling sequence that mirrors the opening credits of the Ali G show. Actually, bonus points just for making an original video for a goofy internet mashup in the first place.
