VIDEO: billy woods – Headband (Prod by Essex Dogs)

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

Did his time like Papillon, came out squinting at the sun, winking at the nun. Life like a remake of The Harder They Come.

A non-album single to promote woods’ upcoming History Will Absolve Me album (04/10). Quotables galore over some looped Zeppelin pieces.

EDIT: As per knowledgeable sources, this song was previously released as part of an odds/ends Super Chron compilation.

Open Mike Eagle – Nightmares III (Ft. Illogic & MarQ Spekt)

Monday, March 5th, 2012

I wasn’t sure how Spekt’s often aggressive nature would mesh with the languid stylings of ‘Nightmares’, but everything falls in quite well.

Kool Keith – Drugs (Memory Man’s Back In The ’70s Mix)

Thursday, March 1st, 2012

Just randomly stumbled across some new ‘Drugs’ remix EP, consisting of a few new takes on the Kool Keith classic which has now been remixed approximately 28929297 times. This EP seems about as necessary as Ninja Tune’s ignominious attempt to come up with the worst possible take on ‘Tried By 12′, but whatever, let them have their fun. The real point is that it got me thinking about previous remixes of the song, and Memory Man’s came to mind instantly as by far the best one. It might be better than the original. The luxuriously sleazy beat is truly AM Gold – as in it’s now 9am and I’m still up doing lines and smoking Acapulco Gold till my eyes bleed.

Union – Coco Mango feat. DOOM & RA the Rugged Man (Maticulous RMX)

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

The continuous permutations of ‘Coco Mango’ are slightly puzzling considering the song is not exactly top shelf DOOM. But I suppose in the absence of more new material we gotta make the most of the scarce shreds we’re given. All versions of this track are still better than those shitty half-assed Sitek remixes, so I’m not complaining. This is the fourth take on it (as far as I know), put together by Maticulous and strongly benefited by a verse from the also rarely seen Rugged Man.

If you’re not familiar with the other versions, the original and the highly promoted Damu remix with Insight are streaming HERE. My favorite so far though is the OTHER Damu remix, currently available only as a b-side on this vinyl single. The streaming snippet below is all I could find of it in digital form.

STREAM: Battles – White Electric (Shabazz Palaces Remix)

Thursday, February 9th, 2012

TBH I don’t really know what Battles is, but the fact that this song is getting much more buzz on indie rock-ish blogs than rap ones is pretty telling. Regardless, any new Shabazz Places is very welcome.

The Darling Dears & Funky Heavy – And I Love You

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

Now-Again launches New York funk/soul researcher and archivist David Griffith’s Orivious Records with a masterpiece: the sole document of a lost and unlikely teenage “sweet-funk” collaboration between Rochester, NY vocalists The Darling Dears and backing band Funky Heavy. Originally issued in 1972, the record never made it beyond city’s west side. Today, this rare and exquisite blend of fragile female harmony atop an unexpected bed of raw, plodding funk commands four figures at auction when it appears in its original form.

The juxtaposition of the falsetto (?) vocals against the slow deep funk background on this is incredible.

Squadda B – Server The Dealer / Different Color Gold (Produced By Sea Things)

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

Very rare very secrete Squadda B digi-single with Sea Things that I completely missed last year. Pretty similar to what Squadda/MAz did with Friendzone.

Big K.R.I.T. – Moon & Stars Ft. Devin The Dude (Clams Casino Remix)

Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

I like the original version better, but this is notable as one of Clams’ most regular productions. Bouncy drums, pleasant soft horns – this is good stuff but it feels somewhat removed from the ambient meltdowns and occasional slaps that Clams made his name on. Then again, by the same token it could also be used as an argument for his versatility, which he hasn’t shown too much of so far (except for this, which has unfortunately vanished from the netz).

Quelle Chris – Shotgun Ft. Danny Brown & Roc Marciano

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

The eye-catching b-side from Quelle Chris’ new single “Basquiat”, which just dropped today on iTunes. Both this song and the a-side will be featured on Quelle’s upcoming Shotgun & Sleek Rifle album, which looks crazy as shit based on the description and the track list.
