Bentley – I know / Kristmas – Why I Wanna

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

Today we conclude the promotional portion of DB49 week with two exclusive solo DB49′er efforts, one from Bentley and one from Kristmas. DB49′s debut album Happy Hour drops tomorrow, you might as well start pre-gaming now. The album is conveniently free, so you have more money to spend on beer and weed and DB49 merch or whatever you like to get fucked up on. As of post time it’s around 9 only in certain parts of Europe and Africa, the rest of you got no excuse.

First up alphabetically we got Bentley’s I Know. The song is a slightly off-kilter/drunken take on typical rapper/r&b chick collaborations, dedicated to the universal subject of bitches. You get a nice mellow nod-inducing beat from Mr. Beatnik, two hilarious Bentley verses as bookends, and some sweet crooning from guest songstress Ahu in the middle (her phrasing of ‘I know all the bitches’ is profoundly bonerrific). There’s also a nice little bit reminiscent of the ‘vertical hold’ gag from The Man On The Moon, you’ll know it when you hear it.

Next we got Why I Wanna from Kristmas. Here Professor Kristmas gets his Harvard on to give a 301 level class about the in and outs of the W2 Boy philosophy, with detailed arguments and examples and an appropriate soundbite from ATL to drive the point home. The song was co-produced by Bossman and R.Dot. It premiered officially last night on Baller’s Eve radio.

Big thanks to Codie G for blessing us with the exclusives. Art credits go to Bentley (who came up with the idea for the pic above) and John Turner Jr (who brought it to life).

Black Milk – How Dare You

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

As is often the case with Black Milk, the superior beat makes up for the shortcomings of the serviceable lyrics.

Blacastan – Show Love / Anything less

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

Two really good Blacastan b-sides that weren’t on Blac Sabbath. Honestly I’m surprised at the exclusion, imo they’re both better than some of the songs that did make it to the album proper.

Outkast – So Fresh So Clean (let’s get it on reprise) / The Marvellettes – Too Many Fish In The Sea (Oooh Edit) : two edits by DJ B.Cause

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

DJ B.Cause makes some really great edits/blends/whatever you wanna call it. Here are two examples. The first puts Outkast over Marvin Gaye, for a result that sounds like what a summer evening feels like. The second takes a classic by a Motown doo-wop girl group and adds a bit of De La’s Oooh into the backbone, thus creating something that Scorsese would probably really like to dance to but wouldn’t know how.

Also, check out his Roger Troutman mix which I previously posted here.

Dr Dre – My Life

Friday, June 25th, 2010

With the release of the damp squib “Under Pressure” last week let’s rewind the clock 15 years or so with one of the most anticipated albums that never was. Fresh out of jail after a 6 month bid, Dr Dre hit the studio to work on two new projects: a collaboration LP with Ice Cube and his sophomore album The Chronic 2 – Poppas Got a Brand New Funk. Notorious for taking his time on production, Dre’s stalling came into conflict with Suge Knight’s policy of taking the best music available for the next album release. In this case, it would be 2Pac’s All Eyez On Me that benefited from songs that were supposed to be on Dre’s projects, namely the first single “California Love” and “U Can’t C Me.” This turned out to be the tipping point for Dre’s decision to depart the label as he soon contacted Jimmy Iovine and in alleged conversation told him “make me a deal and I’ll make you some hits.” Chronic 2 and Helter Skelter were dead in the water, leaving the impressive “My Life” perpetually unreleased. A musical autobiography, the track details Dre’s career from spinning at Eve’s After Dark to spearheading the West Coast revolution with Death Row. I’d hoped that WIDEawake Ent. would give us a remaster of this but that appears unlikely with the current turmoil at the label. In the meantime, we’ll have to make do with these two versions: the original “Smokin’ Weed For Hours” track and the re-tweaked and renamed “My Life.” They’re essentially the same song with a couple of different beat switch-ups. I’ll be putting “My Life” on our Death Row Unreleased compilation launching tomorrow. Two discs, 30 tracks, dedicated for the zigganz that was down from day one.

“Donkey Kong” is Craft’s SMKA-produced first “official” single. As far as Big Butt Anthem’s go, this will work just fine. If you are still sleeping on The Prologue, you are missing out on one of the year’s best.

Beverly Road All Stars – I’m still in love/Danger in your eyes

Friday, June 11th, 2010

Summer Fridays and reggae go together like right and left titties.

Names You Can Trust and Bastard Jazz team up to present the Beverley Road All Stars, a new studio project under the guidance of producers DJ DRM and E’s E. Comprised of a select squad of talented studio musicians in Brooklyn, the Beverley Road All Stars mark their debut with 2 new interpretations of classic Studio 1 riddims.

Not too shabby. “I’m still in love” generally maintains the outline of the Alton Ellis original but punches up the drums for more kick and adds some spacey atmospherics. “Danger in your eyes” goes even deeper down the space cadet rabbit hole with abounding synth swirls and druggy horns, which work well against the backdrop of a faster-than-you-would-expect drum pattern.
