Frankie P – Keys Open Doors [Clipse X Doors Trailer]

Monday, March 19th, 2012

I’m generally VERY VERY skeptical of all manner of this vs that mashups, especially ones where you have iconic and/or highly notable artists on both sides of the equation. But Frankie P’s album remains one of my favorites from 2011, and the snippets in video sound do sound intriguing… so I’m willing to give this the benefit of the doubt with an open mind. Hopefully it will be more like AZ’s Memphis Sessions then any of the recent high- concept mashup abortions.

El hanging out with DJ quik, playing piano, cussing out homeboy who talked about punching James DeBarge, and just chilling in the lab with Quik and his homies.

El Debarge: I felt like Beathoven on that motherfuckin piano
DJ Quik: You look like Chopin (sho-pan) around this motherfucker

Awesome youtube find. The clip is taken the DJ Quik’s Visualism doc.

Parallel Thought – Eccentric Breaks & Beats Volume 2

Friday, February 17th, 2012

With 2011 being Parallel Thought’s 10 year anniversary, they decided to create a project that would represent the hard work they had put in over the past decade. Being a classic hip hop production group, their appreciation for samples and the artists of an older era seemed natural to evolve the project into a instrumental mix of beats, breaks and edits of songs that moved the soul. By choosing one labels library (the mighty Numero Group) to use as the source for their musical collage, they found creative freedom to use parts of samples that would normally be avoided in conventional hip-hop because of clearance issues.

Been meaning to post this for ages… something a little different, good mix to ride out what’s left of Friday. Parallel Thought are great producers and Numero is the best re-issue label of all time, that’s already enough for a recommendation. But what really clenched this mix for me was the use of some of my absolute favorite songs from Numero compilations: the instrumental version of Syl Johnson’s ‘Is It Because I’m Black’, Mitch Mitchell’s ‘Never Walk Out On You’, and James Kind’s time stopping ‘California Lady‘. Astute listeners will also spot a quality RJD2 sample taken from Wee’s psych soul opus You Can Fly On My Airplane.

Bob Marley – Stir it up (C&S by Slim K)

Thursday, February 9th, 2012

Love me some c&s reggae, even when its this early in the day and I’m woefully sober. It’s temping to dust off the old discussion about similarities between c&s and dub, but that’s a convo for another time.

Quelle Chris – The Chains

Monday, February 6th, 2012

I’m really diggin how Quelle dropped a very good (undeservedly underrated) Detroit garage soul inspired underground rap record last year, and then moved far into the left field to do things like this and this and now the track below. Even if the minimal wave stuff isn’t always my bag, I got tons of respect for his willingness to experiment with a completely different sound.

PERSONA LA AVE – MUSIC WILL NEVER LEAVE ME (EP)

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

Trillevator muzak, very soothing floating down a river of dreams in a warm blanket kind of sounds. Jokes aside, if you like Friendzone when they’re in near-ambient mode this one is a must. That applies to everything I found on the Persona La Ave bandcamp page, this one EP just happened to jump out at me more than the others. Unfortunately I know nothing about it except that it seems to be from Knoxville.

A couple more streams from this person(s?) are linked below.

Rad Reef Presents: Main Attrakionz Live At The New Parrish

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

Main Attrakionz live at New Parrish. Once again we did the best we could. Thankfully Space Age Hustle supplied us with the instrumentals, and we had an isolated track for the vox, but as it turns out the playback speed of the beats was slightly slower than the instrumentals. It’s funny how the slightest of technical difficulties–like this .5 second discrepancy int he overall length of the track–can totally ruin something. Well anyways, it wasn’t totally ruined. And we did our best to find a happy medium between not working too hard, and getting the music to sound clear. We’re happy with the final product, and we hope you will be too. Check www.radreef.com for a .zip when the downloads here expire.

Some recent favorites and a rare live performance of ‘Legion OF Doom’. MAz are far from polished as a live act, but they make up for the rough spots with sheer enthusiasm and a genuine appreciation for the crowd. This recording captures their exuberance pretty well.
