VIDEO: BADBADNOTGOOD – She (Tyler Cover) Ft. Leland Whitty

Leland Whitty with a sax assist. These kids are unfuckwitable this year. Is that some kind of 8bit cover of ‘Enter Sandman’ in the credits?

K-Def – Supa Heath (LP Version)

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

If you like rap and have a pulse, you’ll recognize what’s going on here exactly 42 seconds after you hit play (maybe sooner if you’re an advanced rap nerd). The twist is that K-Def didn’t actually use any samples here, he played/interpolated everything himself. Which I guess in a way makes this more of a jazz cover than a traditional instrumental hiphop beat.

The track is taken from K-Def’s upcoming Night Shift album, out this December on Redefinition Records.

VIDEO: BADBADNOTGOOD x Tyler, The Creator – Fish

Letting you know ahead of time, Tyler does not rap here. He plays piano. It sounds pretty good too. But I’m slightly dissapointed they’re not playing THIS

LOL X legitimately really good. I think this is the first time we get to see the former Odd Trio collaborate directly with Tyler, despite both side showing much mutual appreciation in the past months.

Autumn Jazz Mix Vol 1 and 2

Friday, October 21st, 2011

Two very mellow very smooth very relaxing very seasonally appropriate jazz mixes I’m shamelessly ripping from Soul Strut. Both were compiled by a guy named Funky Tee, both have been in steady rotation since I found them. Each one is fairly short, 24 and 35 minutes respectively, so they work best when paired together. Probably not the best music for a Friday night unless you plan on staying in, but they’re fantastic for being lazy on a weekend afternoon. Track lists for both are below.

Thundercat – $200 TB Ft. Austin Peralta

Friday, October 21st, 2011

Thundercat’s and Peralta’s solos are both high on the list of my favorite albums released this year, so this is mandatory/compulsive posting. The rest of today will be spent trying to get a hold of the Japan-only version of Golden Age Of Apocalypse this song is taken from. Never mind, I found a link for it and it looks like ‘$200TB’ is the only track here not included in the US version.

Roy Ayers, Pete Rock & The Robert Glasper Experiment – We Live In Brooklyn, Baby (Live)

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

This is a pretty sweet way to kill 16 minutes. Ayers playing one of his most enduring classics with assists from Pete Rock and The Robert Glasper Experiment, recorded live in July 2011 at the North Sea Jazz Festival. Look at him go, he’s feeeeeelin it. I’m not 100% sure what exactly Pete Rock’s part in this was, but he was definitely there. Pay close attention around the 12 min 30 second mark when the song takes an unexpected left turn into “My Favorite Things.”

Frankie P – Hazy Nights In The Heights (An Instrumental Ride Through The Mind Of Frankie P) FREE ALBUM

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

Some of the best instrumental hiphop released this year, part 2.

Actually it might be unfair to call this instrumental hiphop, it’s more like soul jazz with some vague elements of hiphop-ish production. You could consider it as a Harlem noir counterpart to the exemplary swamp funk of Burn One’s The Ashtray, meant for lonely 1am subway rides instead of sunset low-rider cruises (see the video above). I’m honestly blown away by how good this is.
