A great summer album and beyond that one of my favorite albums of any genre in the last few years. The band’s music is hard to describe or neatly classify, it’s a unique take on Latin psychedelia and American soul. However, while the genre tags are hard to pin, the distinct feel of warm weather music is immediately obvious; images of blue sunny skies, lush greenery and waves gently crashing on white sandy beaches all come pouring out of the speakers from the very first notes.

Through tremendous good graces of Jeff Weiss from Passion Of The Weiss I got a chance to interview Bardo Martinez, the lead singer of this band. Bardo and I talked a bit about their influences and origins, as well as the band’s aims and philosophical outlook. I think in the process we did a pretty good job of parsing Chicano Batman’s singular musical stylings. You can read the interview HERE.

The city of Atlanta has a complex and long history with Hip Hop going back into the late 1970â€™s.

Much of this history pre-LaFace records, pre-Outkast and GooDie MoB isnâ€™t known.

Headland & Delowe is a documentary series attempting to weave together the story lines of the artists, managers, promoters and journalists of Atlanta Hip Hop over the past three decades to get an understanding of where Atlanta Hip Hop has been and where it might be going.

Via Blissout we get a blast from the past. Remember when your cousin’s best friend’s sister-in-law wasn’t dating a guy who “made beats”? You can judge for yourself how well this interview stands the test of time.

“I’m quite a people person, actually. I hang out with strange people a lot. I like mentally ill people. I’ve always found schizophrenia fuckinâ€™ excellent. I think it’s the next evolutionary stage of humanity. My father worked in mental hospitals, so I got interested in it from all the stories. I like the idea of people having voices in their head that operate independently. I consider that to be an advantage, not a handicap. I see these people as having two minds, and two minds are better than one. It’s just a shame that, with schizos, it’s working against them rather than for them.

“We’re really only supposed to use a small part of our brains, so maybe these people are evolving towards using a large amount. I reckon they should get a load of schizos and breed ‘em, it could be the next stop for humanity. It would be great to be a schizo, you’d be able to work on two tracks at once!”
