First taste of their upcoming BBNG2, which drops tomorrow. Really nice point-counterpoint structure here between moments of slowly mounting tension and the release of percussion picking up speed.

This certainly lives up to the #BASEDSOUL tag, and is possibly my favorite Keyboard Kid beat ever. Those horns >>>>>>
Mark Aubert – Fake Island
Tuesday, March 20th, 2012
A brief but satisfying warped sample collage built from odd bits of exotica, oldies radio and AM gold. The defining stand-out moment comes on track 2 where strange things are done to doo wop standards with impressive results. Fans of Monster Rally or Madlib’s more esoteric sampling work should be pleased.

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012Dam-Funk – Serious (MP3) / Turquoise Summers – To You
Monday, March 19th, 2012
Dam dropped this leftover from his new album during the weekend, but in .wav form. Since it’s essential spring listening I converted it to mp3 for convenience. Judging by the file title it seems like the version that made the album has vocals.

Elsewhere (on twitter), Dam recommended Turquoise Summers as a like minded modern funk maker. The recommendation was on point.
Clams Casino – Moon & Stars Rmx Instrumental (Big K.R.I.T.)
Monday, March 19th, 2012
One of Clams’ most straight forward productions, a breezy and jazzy beat wouldn’t feel out of place on an early 90s Native Tongues release (or at least a recent release doing a good job of sounding like early 90s Native Tongues.)

STREAM: Harry Fraud – Bird On A Wire (Action Bronson & Riff Raff Instrumental)
Tuesday, March 13th, 2012
This shit on infinite loop till time runs out. This is the official proper version from the digi single, not some dodgy half-assed youtube remake. Stream only, no dl, go buy it on itunes. Harry Fraud has well earned your 99c.
Dale Kruegler & The Missing Felicitys – Thug Isolation Suite
Friday, March 9th, 2012
After 3 years in Trinidadian prison, Dale Kruegler returns to the states. Trading in his beloved guitar “Bermuda” for an alto sax, he joins the remaining members of long defunct r&b/soul jazz ensemble “Brown Slippers” to form Dale Kruegler & The Missing Felicitys, for this captivating interpretation of Lil Ugly Mane’s “Mista Thug Isolation”.
So this exists. Mista Thug Isolation, re-imagined as terrifying experimental doomjazz. And it’s really good too, if you’re into this kind of thing. Plays like BADBADNOTGOOD‘s evil older brother, or a distant but like-minded relative of El-P’s High Water, or the guy who beat up Robert Glasper for lunch money every day at recess.
This single 16 minute track is priced at $500.
REL – Out of View
Tuesday, March 6th, 2012
As expected based on the leaked singles, REL delivers a subtle vaguely futuristic instrumental set. There’s admirable restraint at work here, the beats are not cluttered or overworked and many clock in under 2 minutes. The minimalistic approach pays off, the album is very enjoyable in a low-key way .
