Episode 9 might be titled the Calm Before The Storm, but it’s anything but. Our next show will be a DJ Premier tribute, so we wanted to take a short break from the tributes and get back to the traditional potpourri show. Special guest, Aaron Wade, sat in with us as we discussed and dissed each other’s Hip-Hop Mount Rushmore. We also announced the winner of our Evolution of The B-Boy Sticker pack contest and play some ridiculously dope music from Mobb Deep, Jeru The Damaja, Brand Nubian, Kool G. Rap, Gang Starr, Ice Cube, Das EFX, People Under The Stairs, Insight, J-Zone and Supastition. Plus, we threw in some new jawns by King Magnetic, Kendrick Lamar and a special K-Def/DJ 360 Beneficence remix. OF COURSE this drops just days after I finished the FACT instrumental list. Alchemist has been one of my favorite producers in the last few years, and I really wanted to include him on the list but none of the candidates made it through my overly-anal selection process. Rapper’s Best Friend series features beats that are great for rapping but sound a little plain on their own, Russian Roulette has too much rap to count as an instrumental project, The Good Book was alright but didn’t reflect his recent output in the way that I hoped. Judging by the cover and what I’ve heard so far, Israeli Salad will turn out to be the one I was looking for – the one that just unleashes a flood of all the weird old psychedelia he’s been sampling.

I wrote a round-up of instrumental releases that have come out since Donuts for FACT Magazine. Despite the prodigious length, this list isn’t meant to be comprehensive – there have been hundreds of albums and tapes released that fit the criteria, accounting all of them would’ve been impossible. So I mostly focused on my favorites, while also trying to keep in mind things like influence, public standing and the role each release played in its creator’s career. Note that the ‘post-Donuts’ designation in the title is a temporal reference, not a stylistic one. Some of the most interesting items released in this subgenre since 2006 have notably deviated from the influence and legacy of Dilla and other similarly canonical producers, and I specifically wanted to reflect this in my list as well. DJ Burn One & The Five Points Bakery – Canape (Instrumental EP)

New instrumentals from Burn One & Co. are always welcome. This short set leans on the cloud-rappy side of things, and features Ryan Hemsworth on co-production duties for ‘Voix’. No Clams on this though, which is a mild bummer*. Not sure why all the titles are in French, but why not.
 

 
* Can’t find the tweet evidence but Burn One confirmed that a collab between him and Clams is indeed in the works.
 

Tree – Treestrumentals

This is exactly what it looks like – a collection of Tree’s instrumentals, compiled by the man himself in collaboration with Mishka (spearheaded by their editor @neonpajamas). It’s a great idea all around, Tree is a very good rapper but he was first noticed for his awesomely idiosyncratic Soul Trap production style, and this compilation brings that aspect of his career back into the spotlight. The execution is neat too, each instrumental is cut down to below 2 minutes, which circumnavigates that thing where beats made for rapping sound repetitive in instrumental form (I’m guessing this was also done to prevent other rappers from jacking them).
