MIND=BLOWN. The swell that starts at 2:30 is pretty much the greatest shit ever. I would kill for a good mp3 version of this.

Bootsy Collins – I’d Rather Be With You (CLARKED & SCREWED)
Thursday, March 11th, 2010Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears – Snatch it back and hold it (unreleased Junior Wells cover)
Monday, March 1st, 2010
I saw Black Joe play the Bowery last week, as expected he tore shit down. If you get a chance to see him live don’t miss it, especially on this tour while he is accompanied by Cedric Burnside and Lightning Malcolm (that’s gonna be a whole another blog post).
My one and only disappointment with this show – they weren’t selling Black Joe’s/Honeybears older super rare self titled albums. I’ve been trying to track down Black Joe Lewis and Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears for a while now with no luck. If anybody could help out in that regard I would be much obliged. You can have Alaska for a day as compensation for your efforts. He raps good and does windows, amongst other things.
Meanwhile, here is an unreleased track from them that popped up as part of their Daytrotter Session.

Karl Hector & The Malcouns – Live at ChoiceCuts, Dublin
Thursday, February 4th, 2010
Karl Hector & The Malcouns are another incarnation of the German funk band Poets Of Rhythm, who are incidentally also The Whitefield Brothers. In 2008 they released the Sahara Swing LP, which combined funk, afro-jazz and psychedelic krautrock to inspire hugemongous erections for music nerds the world over. Since then the band has been quiet, presumably working on their new one as The Whitefield Brothers, meanwhile releasing only 1 single in this incarnation (I posted the bside from it here) The one shred of anything approaching new material that has surfaced recently has been this live show recorded in Dublin.
The set list here contains several selections from Sahara Swing, a couple of tracks that I hope are new material and one or two songs recorded by this band in their other guises. There are also a few covers, among which are a Mulatu Astatke classic and a take on Rob Kanda’s weirdo afro-psych favorite “Make it fast, make it slow” which the nerds should recognize as the original to J.Dilla’s “Make it fast”.
Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings – I learned the hard way (first single and album info)
Monday, February 1st, 2010
Sharon Jones & Co have a new album coming out in May called I Learned The Hard Way. I believe the song below will be the first single, and it’s pretty damn good. If this is any indication the album will follow the same formula they’ve used before, making Stax-inspired retro soul. Whatever works…

DJ B.Cause Presents – Playin’ Kinda Ruff (The Troutman Legacy)
Wednesday, January 27th, 2010
I found this great mix of Zapp and Roger stuff over on DJ B.Cause’s erstwhile Diamonds In The Dust blog. Here B.Cause compiles a number of their well known staples and throws in some more obscure cuts and guest turns for good measure. The bulk of it leans towards the mellow, so the mix is more suited to sparking a joint than to sparking up the dance floor.
B.Cause’s own description:
I’ve had it in my mind to do this project for a long time, but it just kept getting pushed back…of course I picked an opportune time amongst the hectic holidays to put the deadline on myself – doh! Regardless, I’m really excited and proud to present this new mix, as Roger and Zapp have always inspired so many with their unique and pioneering brand of futuristic funk. You will hear most of the staples as well as plenty of lesser known rap choruses and interludes, and your usual assortment of blends and cuts that were probably over-scrutinized in the process of creation. Rest in peace Roger & Larry, & much respect to the entire Troutman family.

Mayer Hawthorne – Green Eyed Love (instrumental)
Monday, January 25th, 2010
To be honest, I got tired of Hawthorne’s A Strange Arrangement album pretty quickly. Mind you I was a supporter originally – I championed those first released songs before they made it to the heart-shaped vinyl, ripped any shreds of new and/or commercially unavailable audio from youtube and radio broadcasts, put my friends on to it, etc. But when the album came it hit my house and my ipod with less a bang than a whimper. It’s not that the album was flat out bad, yet it didn’t really resonate. Older singles were still good, some of the new songs were almost as good, that’s about it. There was something sneakily disengeneous about the whole thing, as if it was a work of somebody concientiously trying hard to imitate the sound of soul as opposed to actually creating it organically. Maybe I’m being too harsh and snobby… I’m well aware that A Strange Arrangement was embrased by many who are far better versed in the the genre than I. To my humble ears there was simply better new soul music made last year, both of the retro and the forward-thinking variety. I’d rather just listen to Lee Field’s My World again, or the JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound album.
Anyway (rant over), one of the things that I did enjoy about the album was the tremendous closer Green Eyed Love. Mayer’s falsetto sounded good here, but the real draw for me was the production. Specifically I was blown away by the guitar solo that kicks in around 2:18. I wasn’t alone in this sentiment, when the song first debuted on Benji B’s show there was talk of much air guitarring in the studio. I was hoping that if the song was ever released as a single Stones Throw would honor the old tradition of putting the instrumtal on the flipside, as opposed to the modern trend of tacking on a handfull of random remixes. As it turns out they did both.
I wont try to describe what it sounds like, let’s just say if the words ‘guitar solo’ have any appeal you should probably check it out. Mind you, the first two minutes before it hits aren’t bad either.

DJ Shadow – Live in LA 10/31/09
Friday, January 15th, 2010
That cover pretty much says it all. While the man’s official output since the seminal Endtroducing has been… inconsistent, his DJ sets are usually on point.
Official Verbiage:
2010 German issue limited edition CD album featuring a live set by DJ Shadow spinning tracks from a crate of vinyl across 3 turntables in a small ballroom at LA’s Park Plaza Hotel at ‘The Halloween Masquerade Benefit Ball’ event organised by KCRW, on 31st October 2009 – almost an hour and twenty minutes of continuous mix!
‘I’m not immune to playing a hit or two; sometimes it’s necessary to show the audience that I’m not conducting an educational seminar. But here we are in the Serato age, with access to millions of songs and DJ’s are still playing the same fifty over and over again… FROM THEIR LAPTOPS. There’s something wrong with that. That’s why to the extent that I am able, I insist on playing vinyl. After all, some songs went out of print for a reason!’ DJ Shadow
Dam-Funk – Speak the truth/Can U relate to me?
Wednesday, January 13th, 2010
Some brand new Dam-Funk, grabbed from his Soundcloud page. Allegedly recorded only 3 days ago (Moon Pie… what a time to be alive!)
That Soundcloud page also has a track he recorded in 1990 called ‘Can U Relate 2 Me?’ It’s not up for download, so streaming will have to do for now.

Om Unit – Light Grid/Lavender
Monday, January 11th, 2010
It’s a slow Monday, but I am kinda digging this new single by Om Unit (aka Dj 2Tall). 2 tracks of deliberately paced retro-futuristic electro funk, sneakily infectious and head-nod inducing. There’s some similarity to Dam-Funk’s stuff, but we won’t hold that against him.
