Here we have the first taste of the much lauded collaboration between Dam-Funk and former Slave frontman/all around 80s funk powerhouse Steve Arrington. It’s as good as I expected it to be, this pairing just makes too much sense to yield a bad result. I was hoping for maybe something bit more spacey ala Dam’s solo work, but that’s really a minor gripe. This album is now officially upgraded from ‘anticipated’ to ‘can’t wait for this shit to drop’ (hopefully it won’t be too stingy on the keytar solos.) Extra thought.. Arrington singing on a Master Blazter song would be epic.

I’ve been obsessed with these 3 songs all day today. This kind of electro-space-funk (I’m trying to avoid the d-word on principle) always makes me want to engage in a slow motion battle with space pirates, possibly with the ghost of Giorgio Moroder as my wing man. Alternately, it makes me feel like Kenny in the ‘Major Boobage’ episode of South Park – flying through psychadelic space in a Trans-Am, cheezin my balls off. Either way this is powerful shit.
An excellent live rendition of my one of my favorite songs of 2009, looser and jammier than the album version. So good I had to rip the audio. According to this interview the group should have another album out in December, which is something to look forward to.
Los Sospechos are basically The Budos Band with the kind of bold flavor they enjoy in … Albuquerque! Depending on the specific description/press release being offered, this band consists of either members of the Budos Band joined by new faces or is just members of the Budos Band under a different name. The music certainly sounds Budos-ish, albeit there is an extra touch of the White Sands in the mix. Either way, it’s good. The two songs are taken from the Postales soundtrack.
I had to repost this from the venerable Earfuzz due to my huge hard-on for Eddie Hazel. I abbreviated from their more expansive post, but kept the pertinent parts intact out of respect for the original poster.
Billy Bass Nelson, original Funkadelic bass player, has this jam with guitarist Eddie Hazel called ‘I Ain’t Got Nobody’. I don’t much about how it came together. Billy Bass handles the lead vocals here. Unfortunately, somebody but bad mutronic bass overdubs on top of Billy’s monster straight ahead sound.
One more from the original Funkadelic crew – including Billy Bass Nelson, Eddie Hazel, Tiki Fulwood and Bernie Worrell of Funkadelic. Here the group does the backing track for JJ Barnes‘ ‘So Called Friends’
Based on the early leaks and the two Prologue Eps I’m expecting some quality Blacklight Poster Rap. So far Aleon and SMKA have managed to stay away from the fruitier aspects of that particular subgenre, hopefully that’s the case here as well.
Liam Bailey has a lot going for himself – he’s a talented song writer, he has a soft voice reminiscent of Marvin Gaye and appended with a hint of a reggae inflection, and he’s backed by Saalam Remi. This combination of assets has a lot of potential, this guy is worth your attention (assuming you’re a soul fan).
His first official single “I belong” is available for download via his website/facebook, and it’s good. However the song that really drew me in is “You better leave me”, which is currently stream-only. Both are below.
Jesus fucking christ this is the greatest thing I’ve heard all week. You should probably be sitting down when you hit play, your knees might buckle from the blues overload.
This concert happened at the Supershow Colosseum in 1969. I would give my left nut for a proper bootleg.
Numero continues doing god’s work as the greatest reissue label around. This trailer is for their upcoming Syl Johnson anthology. You can preview and pre-order this essential set here
I really hope Numero puts together a tour to promote this, maybe something in the vein of their Eccentric Soul Revue with Syl as a headliner. Watching the man unerringly blaze through ‘Is it because I’m black’ while he was (seemingly) too drunk to stand was one of my favorite live music moments of 2009. Do not miss one of his shows if you have a chance to see one.
French beatmaker Onra has been getting tons of positive press this summer for his electro/80s R&B tinged Long Distance album. Riding what I assume to be the same wave of inspiration, he recently added this edit of the seminal 80s New Jack Swing classic to his bandcamp page.
The edit makes good use of the original, keeping the general vibe in tact while addI’M SORRY I’M HAPPY FOR ONRA AND I’M GONNA LET YOU FINISH BUT DJ SCREW ALREADY MADE THE BEST ‘NIGHT AND DAY’ CHOP OF ALL TIME MAN
A moment of retardation in celebration of my rapidly approaching 30th birthday. Onra’s edit was originally spotted on Moovmnt.
