Raise your hand if you’re generally pretty ok with how Curren$y’s career has progressed over the last few years, but still kinda wish he would drop another tape or two murdering a buttload of classic beats.

Killa Cal Wayne – Headed To The Promise Land (mixtape)

From whatever scarce info I could find, I get the feeling Killa Cal Wayne is something of a minor cult favorite in Texas (parts of it anyway). Very little of his material is available for dl via the usual internet channels, most of what I’ve heard I’ve found through youtube. Those clips show a capable hardcore mixtape rapper, not doing anything particularly new but running that lane well. He’s got the ability, the grit, the menacing attitude, he can actually write a song, and he sports an inspired beat selection without regional biases. He reminds me a bit of Freddie Gibbs around 2009ish, but more serious and more downbeat.

Headed To The Promise Land, released in late 2010, is the only mixtape of his I was able to get a hold of so far, and it’s a good showcase for all those qualities. ‘I’m On’ (the clip at the top) was the lead single from it, streams for a few other included tracks are below. Don’t sleep on ’48 Bars Of Power’ and ‘The Game’, those are my current favorites.

SGP going over some dubstep beat. It’s a little old I guess, but sounds very Halloween appropriate. I’m a little surprised at how well this works, SGP’s style meshes perfectly with the deep dark tone of the instrumental. Mind you, 9/10 times I strongly dislike dubstep; I mean that literally as I’ve heard about 10 songs total that genre and disliked all of them except this one. Maybe I haven’t been listening to the right things.

This freestyle is almost exactly 2 years old, but I’ve never heard it until 3 days ago. It’s funny as hell and a good example of Brown’s talents, as he’s one of the few among rap’s new school that’s actually good at freestyling (which isn’t really an indicator of anything, just a stray observation.) So anyway, I got the audio from this clip ripped to mp3, with the talking in the beginning removed. Huge thanks to the legendary Verge for the tech work.
