School Of Sharks Presents: The Broady Sessions (A Grilchyface/Steadybloggin Exclusive)

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

When Marq first sent me the Snake Eyes Vs Storm Shadow mixtape he also threw in some unreleased raw Broady Champs sessions to be included as a bonus. Due to the large overall volume of material, I decided to save them for a separate post. Marq also wrote a foreword about how this music came about, in the process providing some invaluable background information about his career and experiences in the music industry. So here they are: The Broady Sessions.

Well… I had gotten a couple g’s for a single (back when you could get dough like that for like 2-3 songs lol) but it was a hectic time in my life. Lot of hustling but I was supposed to do a whole album for Subverse. I actually was spending like days at a time wit Big Juss and Scienz of Life, just chilling and vibing and recording. I had met Doom in 99 and used to just build on the phone wit him a lot as well. He actaully told me when I get my budget he’d produce my whole shit for like $200 a beat. Shit was looking really, really good for the kid goin into 2001, when my single dropped. I felt like my album was gonna be an underground classic. Shit I even ran into El-P in Atlanta around the time and he was like “yeah I heard your single, I like it” so I was feeling real confident.

Ill Mondo – Gentlemen Prefer Blunts (C&S Soul Mix)

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

As 420 passes into the twilight hours, we get semi-sophistimacated.

“Gentlemen Prefer Blunts” is a soul-fueled homage to DJ Screw and the syrupy southern Chopped & Screwed slow jams. The mixtape consists entirely of vinyl 45s played back at a plodding 33 1/3 rpms, with juggling and DJ tricks whenever double copies were had. The slow mix invites listeners to hear Sharon Jones in a new light, and re-experience classic tracks from Rick James and Donald Byrd through codeine-soaked ears. Continuing the tradition of Dj Screw and keeping with their Funk and Soul background, Ill Mondo presents “Gentlemen Prefer Blunts.” This free mixtape is a fresh take on Chopped and Screwed music, focusing on classic Soul and rare groove records from the 60′s and 70′s. This is the first in a series, and Ill Mondo plan to bring many more lost gems along with instant classics, all played back at a slow, head-nodding pace. Enjoy!”

Full tracklisting is below the jump. More info about the mix here.

Main Attrakionz – N***** On The Run Eatin EP (Presented By SteadyBloggin)

Monday, March 28th, 2011

Dense lyrics by Squadda and Mondre, dense production from Squadda and friends splitting time between weightless psychedelia and intense necksnapping freakouts, an aesthetic focused on progressive sound while never abandoning appreciation for classic foundations – everything that I like about this group neatly packaged into a new 9 track EP. Big thanks and a huge shout out to Squadda and Mondre for putting us in the mix on this one.

I want to specifically single out track 7 on the EP, ‘Sweet Memories’ . This might be my favorite Main Attrakionz semi-throwback styled song to date, I’m a huge sucker for that Ike’s Mood break. Click on the song title above to check that out.

BONUS FEATURES 1: ‘Fuck The World’ video, which visually and sonically clearly leans to the more tripped out side of their output. A snippet of this song was featured on Squadda’s recent I Smoke Because I Don’t Care About Death mixtape.

BONUS FEATURES 2: If you need an introduction/primer on Main Attrakionz go download Space Age Hustle’s Two Man Horror Film, The Main Attrakionz Compilation, which is probably the best overview of the group’s work to date.

Nate Dogg – Nobody Does It Better

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

If Dre was the sound of G-Funk and Snoop was voice, then Nate Dogg was surely the harmony. Tying together lush production and smooth vocals with his rich, raspy melodies, Nate brought a defining quality to the music. Raised as a gospel singer in East Long Beach, he crashed onto the regional scene with his work on Mista Grimm’s “Indo Smoke” and Dr. Dre’s “Lil’ Ghetto Boy,” but it was his appearance alongside Warren G on “Regulate” that pushed him into the national spotlight. When Death Row Records collapsed under it’s own misdeeds, he took his talents from coast to coast, never failing to impress as the go to guy for that Californian vibe whilst giving career defining hits to the likes of Ludacris, Fabolous and 50 Cent. Many have tried to imitate him and some have even tried to snatch the crown as the king of the rap hook, but to no avail. They can come closer than close. Original they never could be.

Although Cannibal Ox’s critical reception remains generally positive, the duo’s talent is underrated and as a result, their music is misunderstood.  Their only album — 2001′s The Cold Vein— and its official singles are subjected to greater scrutiny than the rest of their discography: a scattered collection of cameos, freestyles, compilations cuts, b-sides, and assorted rarities. This is inevitable and understandable but also unfortunate. Critics focus their praise on producer El-P’s efforts to construct a cohesively dark, dissonant, cohesive vibe for the album, in the process diminishing the contributions of emcees Vast and Vordul.  The duo’s larger body of work, which both anticipates and deviates from the sound and vision of The Cold Vein, is only further obscured as a result.
