’80 Blocks From Tiffany’s’ finally coming to DVD
Wednesday, October 6th, 2010Shame on me for missing this news when it first popped up in August. This cultiest of all cult documentaries/essential piece of NY history has languished in obscurity for far too long, being available only via fuzzy bootlegs and grainy youtube vids (the ultrarare official VHS version now goes for $100+). This fall it’s finally being re-released, restored and refurbished with all sorts of bonus features and added materials. Judging by the DVD trailer above the image quality seems as good as it can possibly be. No exact release date yet, but if it actually comes out it will be one of the year’s more essential DVD offerings. Cover art and official press release below the jump.

Friday, August 27th, 2010DOWNLOAD: Adrian Younge and Black Dynamite Orchestra – Shot me in the heart (live)
An excellent live rendition of my one of my favorite songs of 2009, looser and jammier than the album version. So good I had to rip the audio. According to this interview the group should have another album out in December, which is something to look forward to.

Black Milk & Freddie Gibbs Come to NY’s Home of Hip-Hop, SOBs, – August 3rd A tornado of true, eclectic hip hop is coming in from the Midwest to S.O.B.’s on August 3rd. Please join us as we tear up a Tuesday night with Black Milk & Freddie Gibbs. Hailing from Detroit Michigan, Black Milk brings the funk and soul to Hip Hop that most artists and producers strive for but cannot obtain. In 2004, he released his first album Sound Of The City, Vol. 1 on Fat Beats Records, which was given much praise. Now in 2010, Black Milk, through twitter, has announced that his forthcoming album, Album of the Year will be released on September 14th. Catch Black Milk, and cuts off the new album at S.O.B.’s on August 3rd. When critics compare you to the late Tupac Shakur, you know your doing something right. Freddie Gibbs emerged out of a disheveled Gary, Indiana street corner. When you hail from the same city as the famous Jackson Five, you know you have to do your city right and Freddie Gibbs does just that. Before even releasing an album, Freddie Gibbs was offered a deal by Intercscope Records. Freddie’s music is described as a play-by-play look at street politics. Now through his Gibbs Family label, Freddie plans on releasing his highly anticipated ep Str8 Killa on August 3rd 2010. On August 3rd, please join us at S.O.B’s for a night of partying with Black Milk & Freddie Gibbs celebrating his new release! Don’t miss out!”
Steady B’s Best New Rapper Tourney (Round 2)
Wednesday, July 21st, 2010SteadyBloggin.com’s Best New Rapper Tournament has begun. We’re using that term “new†loosely because when you think about it not many are new at rapping, just new to many of us, to the internet, the radio, the zines or your favorite blogs.
We avoided most major label artists. Sorry, you won’t be seeing the likes of Lupe Fiasco, Gucci Mane, Drake or even Charles Hamilton on here. We carefully handed out the 64 spots to rappers we felt would be complete this tournament.
It is true we are using some current internet favorites; but we hope you take the time in getting to know all of the contestants. We’ll be providing audio and video samples for each artist so carefully vote on your favorite. If you aren’t a member of Philaflava make sure you register to vote. Print out the brackets and get ready for a month full of voting but most importantly have fun. –Philaflava
