BSBD graciously allowed me to hear Glaciers early, and after having spent some time with it I’m convinced that it represents a tremendous leap in the evolution of instrumental hip-hop. In terms of song structure, shifting interplay of moods and emotions, the juxtaposition of bombast and serenity, the the way it combines sampling and live perfomances, even the song lengths (actually, especially the song lengths)… Glaciers is by far the most ambitious thing I’ve heard from both the group and the subgenre from which they came, and it takes that subgenre into almost uncharted waters. That is if you want to classify it as instrumental hip-hop at all, which might be an unfairly limiting designation. The group’s origins lie in rap production, but their experiments might be taking them to another place entirely.
