E Da Ref – Wake up

Monday, September 27th, 2010

Off-the-cuff simplicity makes this song – the beat is barely more than a muffled drum, the single verse about waking up hung over is very straight forward, the whole thing feels more like a demo than a finished product. But somehow that rough quality is what makes it appealing. If the song tried harder it probably wouldn’t be as good. Side note, I like how this guy sounds a tiny bit like a young Cee-Lo.

Camp Lo – Coolie High (demo) / Bubblin (Anita demo)

Monday, September 27th, 2010

I found these just casually cold lamping on a disc 2 of a random 2007(?) Best of Camp Lo compilation. That disc is kinda weird, I’m not sure how it qualifies as a ‘best of’ considering that many of the featured tracks are rather obscure. Anyway, the songs below are the standouts of the bunch.

Both of these show Lo at their ethereal best and by demo standards the sound quality is better than average. This particular version of Coolie High is actually the fourth ‘official’ permutation of the song (the others – 1, 2, 3), being fairly different from both the album version and the 2 remixes. I’m curious how much similar material Ski has laying around in the vaults, hopefully his recent resurgence will bring some of it to the surface. Uptown Saturday Night is due for a deluxe reissue treatment anyway.

Just for the hell of it, here’s the Camp Lo version of Feelin’ It. The story of how Jay Z ended up with this beat is now stuff of internet canon and the song has been around for a while, but I still never skip it when it randomly pops up on the ipod.

MondreM.A.N & Shady Blaze – Loyalty And Royalty (mixtape)

Friday, September 24th, 2010

Main Attrakionz/Green Ova continue to impress. This time the spotlight is on Mondre and Shady Blaze. Instead of trying to describe it I’m just gonna post a few of the highlights that grabbed me on first spin.

The song that sounds like Soul Train 2045 (track 7): Green Ova Ready

The mission statement (track 9): Souls Of Green Ova ft. Squadda B

The inspirational shit (track 11): Reach High

“Walking down this dusty road the only thing open is our eyes” (track 12): M.A.N feat Squadda B

Wilder Zoby – Contagious (prod. by Wilder Zoby and El-P)

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

The snippet of this song that appeared on weareallgoingtoburninhellmeggmixx3 was already one of my favorite songs of the year, and now El-P let loose the full version and my initial reaction is a mild acid flashback followed by a rapidly spreading warm and sticky sensation in the crotchal region.

<a onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/el-p.bandcamp.com/track/contagious-full-version');" href="http://el-p.bandcamp.com/track/contagious-full-version">contagious (full version) by EL-P</a>

The description that came with the song promises good things on the horizon:

this is the full version of the song that appeared on my weareallgoingtoburninhellmeggmixx3 (gold dust) by my favorite performer in the world wilder zoby. wilder sings and produces, i co produce. its going to be on his upcoming solo record tentatively entitled “wildcat”, which i co produced with him one freezing month in louisville kentucky. wilder is on some serious smoked out space pimp shit with this one. in fact the moog keytar-through-guitar-pedal solo at the end was done drunk and high as the dickens at 5am in one take.

The upcoming album should be great, as historically Wilder (with Chin Chin) has showed plenty of aptitude for “some serious smoked out space pimp shit”. Like on GG And The Boys and Go There With You for example.

VIDEO: G-Side – 1.1.11 commercial

1.1.11 commercial from Lawrence and Clark on Vimeo.

The art of John Turner Jr, now in…. Slow Motion (sorry, couldn’t resist the pun). Anyway, here is a short commercial for G-side’s new album, coming on 1.1.11. The clip gives new life to some of the album art leaked over the past few weeks via the new SMS site and Hunstville Got Starz and brings a new dimension to the album’s promotional strategy devised by Codie G. It also serves as an introduction to the media production duo of Lawrence and Clark, the talent behind the aforementioned new website and creators of some crazy shit I can’t even show you yet. Please keep checking for updates on www.hsvinternational.com which will feature exclusive SMS related content not available anywhere else.

For a little bonus, here’s a re-up of G-Side’s Dreamz. I originally posted this song back in February, but it seems like an appropriate soundtrack as the group’s stature rises and the work on the new album continues with ever increasing momentum.

J Dilla / Flying Lotus / Farnell Newton – Fall in Love (trumpet rework)

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

This is, for lack of a better word, gorgeous. One more example of how Dilla’s music has lend itself to some great live/organic reinterpretations.

UPDATE: got a download link for you now, courtesy of Farnell Newton himself (thanks).

Ace Creator (Tyler) – Cult Shit

Tyler going over Madlib’s ‘Stepping into tomorrow’ from the Shades of Blue album, which to me is still Madlib’s best instrumental album to date. The full long version of the instrumental is embedded above.

Just for the fuck of it, below the jump you’ll find some footage of Tyler and Bon Bon destroying an LRG Sidekick with a samurai sword and a razor scooter (thanks Icedawg).

Cam’ron “Wanna Get”

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

Now this is the Cam’ron that we all know and love. He feels much more at home over some Rose Royce shit than the spastic wanna be Heatmakerz drums of some pimply Serbian immigrant in his parent’s basement in Oyster Bay who buys ecstacy from Cam’s accountant’s son. Thank God.

VIDEO: Dam-Funk – Hood Pass Intact (Vocal Version)

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

Nice video, reminiscent of Madlib’s old video for Slim’s Return. Dam’s video is far less stylized which gives it a more intimate feel, but both pursue the same central theme of presenting the artist’s own music as an integral and inseparable part of their daily existence.
