PlayCousanS – Never Die ft PT “Primetime”

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Another great example of the seemingly endless talent pool that is Huntsvegas, Al. Check out another good PlayCousanS song/video below the jump.

Keith Murray – What they say

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

I doubt most people give a shit but…. a few new Keith tracks popped up lately, and they’re not that bad at all. In fact, I like them more than anything Redman has done lately (cmon Redman, autotune?). If nothing else these songs show Keith can still rap, and still has a decent ear for beats. Unfortunately all but one of them fall victim to one of my biggest rap pet peeves – shitty choruses. This is the one that manages to avoid that pitfall.

Am I crazy or does this song sample Stevie Nicks?

King Geedorah – Snakecharmer ft. Kurious as Biolante

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

Don’t get too excited, Doom doesn’t actually rap on this. But it’s still worth hearing. As of now I can’t confirm if this is a new track or an unreleased leftover, I’m going to assume it’s the latter. If anybody can definitively say otherwise, please let me know.

This song popped up on one of the bonus vinyl singles that comes with the new Ninja Tune XX boxset. If it is indeed a leftover, it’s not hard to understand why it never made it to Take Me To Your Leader – it’s not terrible, but it wouldn’t really add much to the album either. Kurious’ verses are serviceable but not particularly memorable, almost lethargic actually. What really interests me here is the beat. Doom samples a track that I’ve been a fan of for a long time, a weird space folk number called Gönül Dağı by Turkish rock god Barış Manço. Manço has gained some internet prominence during the last few years via the resurgence of interest in Turkish psychedelic rock. So, if it’s a new track then Doom is (mildly) trend hopping, if it’s a 2003 leftover then he was way ahead of everybody.

L Dash ‘Blow My Cartridge’

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

L Dash raps as if he was birthed as the result of an unholy orgy involving TI, Curren$y, Guru and a whole lot of drugs. His syrupy, monotone flow allows him to drop whip-smart punchlines with what sounds like casual smugness. Imagine if the aforementioned TI drank and shit ton of lean and read up on Renoir and Jacques Louis David. Production varies from video game sampling trap-hop bombast via SMKA and SickVisionz to simply rapping over somewhat obvious classics like  “Incarcerated Scarfaces”. Rather than play the cheap nostalgia card here, L Dash uses references to forgone eras to paint a picture of a world that we have regretfully let pass us by. This shit is good.

The Canz – Ferris Bueller (Personal Day) ft El Prez, Aleon Craft

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

I’m gonna hate for a sec. It’s a beautiful fall day outside, and I’m stuck at work and I really don’t want to be here, and these guys make a song about taking a day off to smoke and watch cartoons? This is a serious ‘salt in the wound’ kind of situation. Do you people even know how much of that blueberry shit I still got left in the jar? Do you realize I barely even cracked the new It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia dvd yet? Shit, I could be grilling my lunch in the sun right now, instead I’m at a desk under florescent beams. And you just throw it in my face like that? Screw you guys, NOT COOL.

Jokes aside, this song is pretty sweet. Love that psych/proggy intro.

Black Rob – I Don’t Know ft Peedi Crakk & Lil Cease (prod by Harry Fraud)

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

I can’t decide if this is genuinely meant to be maudlin (Rob’s verse specifically), or if the reflective mellow-ish beat just overtakes what’s actually said to completely dictate the tone of the song. Pretty cool either way, although Cease’s verse is completely superfluous.

This is one of those songs that stops time. Feels very appropriate for the coming of fall. I’ll up the mp3 a bit later. Taken from Numero’s amazing Light: On The South Side compilation.
